Story Behind The Song
I had originally composed this piece in 1997 to use on my recording entitled "Purity" (1998) under the working title, "The Summit". But something told me not to record it at the time in either a trio or quartet format because it needed more.
But more wasn't the story I was trying to tell with "Purity". "Purity" was a recording done in three days to document that time period and was meant to be as pure and "to the point" as possible: And I still say that it represents the most accurate description of our live sound, even today. But "Live To Love, Love To Live" is a tune that was crying out for arrangement and layering. The more I played through its changes on the piano, the more supporting parts I began to hear. For the recording "Live To Love, Love To Live", ultimately this same-titled composition became the "piece de resistance" from an arranging standpoint and earned the title track status because it was arguably the most soulful tune of the nine compositions I had to offer for this particular recording.
This piece contains two of my favorite improvisations on my "Live To Love, Love To Live" recording in Dave Edwards' atmospheric piano solo and B.D. Lenz's triumphant guitar solo on the rideout.
