Story Behind The Song
As I followed the glorious sunset alongside my lone tree companion the magnificent night sky began to take over. In the Grand Canyon, of course, there's not a single man-made light around for miles, and I knew (having lived most of my life in the light-polluted northeast) that I was about to witness an awesome sight.
And so to create the wonder and majesty of a crystal, starry evening, I thought it would be perfect to feature Steve (Girardi) and one of his many hip guitar synthesizer sounds. We settled on a "Vocorder" sound that was both spatial and ethereal to create the common tonal notion of "outer-space". In addition, I thought it would be nice to have Ron (Velosky) play the "A" section melody on acoustic bass. The melody for this section is actually a recycled idea that was intended initially for use on my first recording entitled "Returning" (1992) but was indefinitely "shelved". This melodic idea was originally written in 4/4 time, but I converted it to 6/8 and then I added a "B" section to the piece (played by Steve [Girardi]).
But again, the "Vocorder" steals the show in recreating the image of that night. Never before had the Milky Way appeared so clear to me, running along the spine of Cygnus, The Swan - it was as though someone had poured countless diamonds along a vast stretch of black velvet. Now that scene was what I call "LOVIN' TO LIVE!"
