Hi, Diane. Cheers! Wonderful moods and versatility on your recent tunes, "Soul Emancipation," "Twilight Waltz," Cleaning the Garage," and "You Are Power."

Two of my songs, "Sunny Sunday" and "Raindrop Soul," finally met up with you in the Review section! You have an excellent and sensitve sense of composition. I'll be sure to go back and listen closely to the flute and percussion. Another suggestion, "...and perhaps a little tighter on the ending where the drums could end exactly at at :46 for a crisper finish," now you're talking! Yours are helpful and constructive suggestions. Thank you much for listening and giving me your thoughts.

The terrific vocal is Liliia Kysil from Kyiv, Ukraine. She's on FiveRR and she's a very friendly, polite, and talented vocalist. Now, to balance her vocals on "Raindrop Soul" with the instrumentation. I have a Waves plug-in called Vocal Rider that automatically makes adjustments that can be modified, so I'll give that a try as I'd like to keep her enunciations of words as much as I can. I really have to be careful with reverb or

Warren Hein and Jeana Potthoff really had a lot to do with the arrangements and I took their advice. Jeana played the beautiful piano track. Warren has more ideas he has given me.

It's nice and enjoyable to have you on Broadjam, Diane!

Well, I forgot to finish the reverb sentence and BJ provides no way to edit. Anyway, I have to be careful with reverb and delays, or it further muddies the enunciation if the vocalist doesn't enunciate every word clearly. (Here I am thinking of clearly worded enunciation long after Manifred Mann botched "Blinded by the Light" and it was still a #1 Billboard hit.) But you are correct about providing distance for the singer and that's the challenge. I could probably apply more reverb and less volume to the repeated lines after the guitar solo. Such a fine line. I tend to be conservative with effects.

I enjoyed your Raindrop song - I was thinking about the vocals - her voice is really pretty! Have you tried doubling the vocal track (if you have that as a separate track) and then pushing the doubled track into the mix a bit? That way you still get a pretty robust waveform, and you can still have room to push it back a little with little to no loss of clarity.. Just a thot. I just finished re-mixing and mastering a 20 year old track that my daughter is singing, "Xmas Kind of Love" it was such a bad recording - I had zero skills at the time but her voice sounds so pretty - I did the doubling thing and it really helped save quite a bit of listenability (is that a word??) I ripped the vocals out with a feature on Cubase 12 called layeration or something, otherwise I'd be trying to fiddle with the whole mixdown - had no tools like that way back when! Well anyway big thanks to you for your very generous comments, I know what you mean about editing comments here, ah it's all good - we just try our best eh?
Cheers and happy more music-making!

I have often put two tracks of the same vocal on a mix. I like doing that better than using a doubler plug-in. Vocalists often record at about -15 to -20db. Yours is a really good solution. I have one track for the lead vocal and other tracks for harmonies. But I think I'll try making a copy as you mentioned and giving it a higher reverb. Your ending idea sounds really good! Cheers! Hi, Randall. How have you been during this HOT summer? I'm in Philadelphia. You? Anyway, music is certainly a tough racket. I did sign 2 contracts (Here You'll Stay, You Need a Wife) but I haven't heard back. Meanwhile, I just published a book. It's called, "But is He Jewish? and Other Quirky Tales." It's on Amazon if you like to purchase it. Musically, I'm instrumentalizing some of my folk songs (Boston, for example) and jazzing up some ballads (Where is My Love?). How about you? Has Spotify helped you? I'm on it but don't give it much attention. I still prefer Broadjam though I sometimes can't believe the songs that are picked especially what they consider rock. I'll be posting a few videos in the next few days. I'll let you know about them once they're posted. Dan

Hi Daniel, you are a writer also? Wow very cool. I'll have to look into that. My sister is also a Writer. you may like her stuff. "Mishigazz and mazel Tov". Funny Jewish humor short stories. Her name is Stephanie Lewis. Hey, I LOVED your comedy routine. The Woody Allen joke was hysterical!
I've signed a couple contracts with Broadjam also but so far not seen one dollar in revenue LOL. However a few of my songs of appeared on the women of substance podcast so I guess I've gotten some decent exposure but that's about it.

I have some great ideas for comedy myself but I'm not able to do the good delivery like you are. I love to meet you one of these days but I'm never in Philadelphia. If you are ever in San Diego please let me know

Hi Dianne,
Thank you for a kind and helpful review of The Drawing Room, it means a lot coming from someone so talented. I'm really a guitar player, this is a bit outside my usual genre(s) and a stretch of my playing ability. So I've been blown away by the BJ response to The Drawing Room - even if the charts are something of a mystery to most of us?!
I have always encouraged genuine feedback for my songs so your comments regarding the woodwind are most welcome, I will re-listen to that part.
I've had a quick listen to a couple of your pieces and loved them, particularly when I switched from the beautiful Twilight Waltz to Cleaning The Garage - what a contrast! Just great.
Thanks again for taking the time to review my music, very much appreciated.

I have to listen to this some more...I really like the sonic experimentations you're doing with "Subway" and "So What Now." You're controlled but not the least bit timid. I'm trying to remember what the guitar chord style you have in "Cleaning the Garage" reminds me of in the last two thirds. It's very likeable.

Yes we draw a lot of inspiration from the ones we love and maybe lost along the way - I think most of my stuff in some way reflects the beautiful people in my life, not all of course, but there are some things we just want to `Say`and music is the only language that really fits the bill for those. Big congrats on Drift Away, a beautiful tribute!

Sorry Di, I didn't mean to mislead you! I do not sing on my songs.
I only write the Lyrics and the Music!
I record me singing with guitar and send it to a musician to have the music created. I then send to a singer. I have been fortunate enough to use great singers to match the songs. Tim Patterson from Florida has sung most.
Kimberley Dunn from Ottawa sings, beautifully, "The Promise", "Drift Away" and "One Night Stand,"
If you were Teary at "I See her....." you better have a tissue ready for both, "Drift Away" and, "The Promise"
If you enjoy any of the songs feel free to select the No. of Stars they deserve!
That is what helps our songs go up the Top Ten Charts on here!
Will hear more from your stable!
Cheers, jim

Absolutely lovely deep and warm and rich piano recording! So, so, so nice and relaxing. What were you worrying about!
Your play is superb! Nice reflective pause at the right time. Your composition is such an emotional piece.
I would have preferred it was a little longer. So expressive!
In actual fact I wanted to listen to it three times.
If this is typical of your compositions, I'm going to enjoy hearing them!
With the Dance Title, I thought it was going to be an upbeat number!
Genuinely Def worth six out of five stars from me! Sorry, could only give five!

I think you may enjoy my latest Ballad, "I See Her Dancing"! Appreciate your feedback!

Ah thank you for your very kind words. I listened through a different pair of speakers and gosh it sounds like it was recorded in a fish bowl. Big fish bowl. Well I like it through my headphones but I think I`ll try another mix tomorrow. Right now I`m listening to your Ulleann pipes song - gorgeous! You are a terrific one-man band! Really, really great songs, and the instrumentals are really really good. And now I`m on the next one...

Hey John - Thank you for that VERY helpful review on "Like No Other" - That's exactly the kind of feedback I need - mixing is my Achilles heel - I will take that information and make a new mix - I heard that shrill quality too but didn't have a fix for it, now I do. I think I can squeeze out a bit more gain too, once I handle that EQ problem. Thank you so so much! Love the community here on Bj, a bunch of stellar musicians, and just fine people, I must say.

You're very much welcome, Diane, and I really enjoy the music you write! Mixing...with all the plug-ins and methods, there are as many ways to mix as there are streets on a map of Toronto. I'm still navigating it, too. I really got inspired to get into it after conversing with Jess Gordon. She mixes and masters all her songs and they sound incredible and she learned it within a year! Yes, lots of fine and friendly people, and your ability is stellar. You may already know this, but when you go into the equalization, drag one of those little circles way up to the top of the graph, then slide it left and right and you'll hear where it really screeches. That's the spot! Then drag that little circle straight down, down, down to the baseline...at 0. Then make a narrow cut from zero on down maybe -3db. (On the corresponding right side it might be something like 40.) That Q knob will narrow it. Here's hoping that might do the subtle trick. I found the EQ problem was much more using your ears than following formulas. There are some sites I've found like Musician on a Mission where I've learned a lot. Also, a video on the Waves plug-in site with Chris Lord-Alge (why do I want to pronounce that as algae?) on how his does mixing.

Hi Diane, Nice of you to take the time to listen to one of my Instrumental versions, "The Promise"(Ensemble)!
My original song is performed beautifully by your Canada's very own, Kimberley Dunn of Ottawa: As are "Drift Away" and, "One Night Stand"! I have varied Instrumental compositions also!
I like a story!
My Catalogue here is Eclectic so dip in anytime! I'm sure you will not be disappointed!
Tim Patterson from Broadjam has just Recorded my latest, "I See Her Dancing", and features strongly in other songs!
I have selected your, "Under The Skin" to enjoy since it has the least plays. It is quite a reflective piece with every line starting on the same note! It is the last note that gives the sentiment! I like the arrangement: a bit Dreamy (I nearly dropped off) but uncomplicated and effective!
Five stars from me!
Can you please suggest your favourite music that I really should listen to?

Hey there Jim - I think I found your stuff on one of the top ten lists, can't believe how many fabulous musicians and composers are here on BJ. Very inspiring with the bar raised so high. I was a member wayyyyy back and I see how it's really expanded since then. Still finding my way around all the new features. Glad you liked "Under the Skin" - I try to do other things besides solo piano which I love (but it gets boring sometimes ha ha) so I'm trying other genres with varying success. I like "Move It" and even "Slam Dunk" for more uptempo stuff, but I'm really a piano player at heart I guess. I will check out your other tracks, it's nice to see collabs - there's so much talent to go around! I'd like to do some of that too in future, and thank you so very much for your very kind comments!

Diane, what is your best piano piece on here.
I love the piano, hence I use it many times in my songs.
The piano can create what other instruments cannot!
There is a lovely lady on here, Jeana Potthoff who plays such expressive piano pieces on here. Maybe you could look her up since you have a common interest/ skill!
