Stevie Lawrence Bio

Stevie Lawrence: Was initially involved in rock bands from schooldays and was active in the Glasgow pub rock scene before turning to acoustic and roots music in the early eighties.

Influenced by a mixture of glam and prog rock, his early idols were musicians such as Zal Cleminson from The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Ron and Russell Mael from Sparks, Mick Ronson from The Spiders from Mars, as well as multi instrumentalists such as Steve Howe.

While working in the recording studio of the Hospital Broadcasting Service in Glasgow, Stevie met up with then folk musician Gerry Sullivan, who presented a monthly programme with live studio guests. While working on this, he was introduced to many Scottish acts of the time such as Ossian, Tonight at Noon and The Ideal Band.
Stevie started playing the odd gig with Gerry's band "Cheap Labour" and then joined long time Scottish folk favourites Cruachan in 1986, replacing Ross Kennedy who had left to join the Tannahill Weavers
Meeting Ross Kennedy was another significant step in his career as over the years, they became involved in many live and recorded projects.

Working with Cruachan for 6 years playing Festivals and Folk Clubs all over Scotland, he then joined the ranks of The Iron Horse, once again replacing Ross. He recorded 3 albums with the band during a 3 year stint as well as touring all over the UK and Europe.

After leaving Iron Horse, Stevie carved a career as session musician and producer and has worked with a diverse range of artists including Canterach, Gaelic Singer and piper Anna Murray, Tannas, Mick West, John Wright, Carol Kidd, Lena Martell, Donnie Munro, Pete Seeger, Laura McGhee, Josh White Jr, Angus Lyon, Shane MacGowan, Maddy Prior, Dascha(German Pop Idol Finalist), Raintown, Sydney Devine, Tom Andrews, Keith Jack, Stuart Cassells, Red Hot Chilli Pipers and currently serves out his rock fantasies with the progressive rock of Abel Ganz.
He rejoined Iron Horse in 2003 with Ross Kennedy, releasing "The Wind Shall Blow For Evermore".

In 2007 Stevie joined The Red Hot Chilli Pipers handling Bass, Percussion and Bouzouki duties and featuring on their triple platinum CD/DVD "Blast", their self titled debut release, "Music for the Kilted Generation" and "Breathe"

2011 was a busy and successful year with production and playing credits on piper Kyle Warren's debut release "Wanted", the critically acclaimed duo album, "A Cruel Kindness" with fiddler Fiona Cuthill and a compilation of his work with the KRL label.
Stevie received a nomination for Producer of the Year in the Scottish New Music Industry Awards.

2012 built on that success, especially for the duo with Fiona.
3 album of the year nominations and stunning reviews for the debut album "A Cruel Kindness" .
Stevie once again received a nomination and won Producer of the Year category in the Scottish New Music Awards.

Current studio projects include a new album "Relentless" by Piper, Kyle Warren
A new "Raintown" album and 3 instrumental arrangements of song by Scottish bard Robert Burns for flute and guitar duo , JKL.

Stevie currently records and tours with UK new country act "Raintown",
as a duo with fiddler Fiona Cuthill, Celtic band "Rallion", cellist Wendy Weatherby and Scottish traditional singer Eilidh Grant.

Hey there Mr. Steve Lawrence, just listened to your Killer Tune, "These Tears Tonight", Great Song & 5 Stars! Is it my imagination, that there is a similarity to the song, "The City Of New Orleans" which is also a 5 Star composition!! Has any one one Broad Jam ever mentioned that?? Just Curious??
Still a wonderful tune, that you have composed!! Bet the audience loves that song, when you play it live at shows!!
The Corey's...............
PS.............Love to connect with you, we think you might enjoy some of our songs as well!!

Hi Margie and Art.
Thanks for the 5 stars for "These Tears Tonight". No one has ever mentioned a similarity to any other song on Broadjam, so I was not aware of any similarities to any other compositions.

Thanks again for the connect.
With best wishes from Glasgow.
Stevie

Isle of the Saints is a Beautiful song Stevie!
I saw you in the Top Ten and selected a lesser played song in your Catalogue! Was not disappointed! Has that Scottish sound and delicately played! Was imagining accompanying Lyrics! I could envisage an Orchestra coming in to build up to a crescendo before finishing delicately the way it does. Will hear more in time! Def 5 Stars! It deserves to be played more on here!

Hi Jim.
Thank you so much. I'm working on a Pipe Band arrangement of this one. Not sure if it will come to light but it could work. Hope all is well with you and thanks again.

Hi Stevie, on the subject of the pipes and at the risk of sticking my nose in, my producer for the Mysterious Lady song went with multi tracked border pipes which gave that rich sound without the pipe band logistics.
All the best for 2022.

J.a.Connor, is that you using electronic pipes sounds? Where would I find someone to create that sound for one of my songs?

Hi Jim, the pipes are the border pipes played by Matt Seattle and multi tracked by Iain mcKinna at Offbeat Studios in Edinburgh. Iain is a really great guy who has worked on quite on a few pipe tracks. I believe he also picked up a classical brit award for his work on Spirit Of The Glen.

Thanks J.A.C., My nephew plays the pipes. He was in the army but came out Last year. He played Flower of Scotland alone for the Scotland rugby team in Italy two years ago! I'd love to incorporate pipes in a song. Thanks for info on access to Iain McKinna!

Hi guys.
I've worked with Border pipes and they're grand but looking at full pipe band here. With additional instrumentation. I'm just finishing a piping album for Greentrax at the moment and hoping to use Kyle Warren for pipe arrangement. Will keep you posted but it might be a while!
