Lover Please

Story Behind The Song

I needed my wife to just listen when I was hurting, and not spring back with and answer as if everything was already solved when it wasn't. Sometimes to be a comforter is to share the doubt and wonder--and to be patient and full of humility--understanding that you may not know all the answers.

Song Description

Lover Please is a request for someone to simply be quiet and not give out trite, superficial answers to everything--from one lover to another to simply be still and bear a burden together without the arrogance and self-righteousness of a slap-in-the-face answer--when the answer to the problem isn't necessarily understood. The song talks about trying to be alone and keep feelings inside becuase of this slapback effect--and how this is such a cold solution to the problem.

I?m tellin you I?m tellin you
Don?t get caught in the reflection
The shapes appear as thought they were footprints or your own
You take one step in and suddenly begin
To use the mirror as a bed till someone lets you in

Lover Please, Lover Please

You were alone
You needed someone to hold to
To get you to be what you?re supposed to be
These things you will have to let go
Travel the world as your own partner in a one woman show

Lover Please, Lover Please

I need a love (Not to talk back just to be a friend)
If you have the answer (then please keep it in)
Would you still love me (not try to control me)
A baby lamb hiding a lion within?

No one else to blame
Nothing left to be said
When the rooster comes home to a cold cold bed
Off with the coat, derby hat on the tree
At the foot of heaven
Where his mansion should be

Lover Please, Lover Please

There?s a cry and a shiver inside each thundering lie of the heart
Of the soul that sought itself alone
For shelter from the storm

chorus II:
I need a love (not to talk back just to be a friend)
Remember when we were sixteen
(we could be sixteen again)
Could you learn how to shield me to keep me from hurting?
Will you call the angels if you see the devil coming?
