Hey man, wow you really review a lot of our songs! Just read the "Night is Young" review and here are my thoughts on your thoughts, ha.

"Seemed like the guys had played this 681 times." Funny thing is that we probably played this song a total of maybe 10 times before recording it. Yikes.

"Lack of dynamic peaks." Dude, I hear ya and you know what I think it really is - the vocal line. I think for having such a party song motive, the vocals were too low. I think had we recorded in a different key, it may have given it some more gusto.

"Story telling." The real story here is the lines in between "Night is Young" in the choruses. Maybe give that another quick listen (if you missed it) and see if that comes out more. It's mean to be a big sing along - easy to remember and one of those songs you don't have to think to hard about what's going on here. Someone drinking with their iPod in? I think you've just discovered another song!!

Anyway, thanks for the input man. I really do appreciate it. I sent you the music video link to that song before didn't I?

Yup, it's odd, I do seem to have the same artists come up often in the reviews.

You know what? I did listen again and have to take the position of "humble shell of my former self," because I was pretty far off with my review comments. I think you might be right about the vocals being a little low, and it's partly the character of the vocal, which is actually quite good and fits the instrumentation and overall sound. I think I'm wrong on that 681 comment. It sounded much more spontaneous and alive this time around. I think there's a bit of a subdued burn (a really good thing) in your style that I mistook for over-rehearsed. Not sure exactly where my head was with that. Also with the dynamic peaks; sounded much better the second time around. Sounded crisp and clear as I listened through headphones. And thirdly - this actually is a story - and I can see (hear) it as something of a sing-along / feel along.

Although with some of that, I gave it the disclaimer that I didn't rate down for the issues I brought up, and don't be offended because I put a lot of words in the constructive box. I usually do that as a "for what it's worth." Aside from scoring, I like to offer another perspective, because; reviews seem a lot less meaningful otherwise, and sometimes it may help, or give the artist something to consider. I think we all feel, from time to time, that we can't always hear ourselves the way others do, and none of "them" hear it quite the same way, anyway. Although I gave this some high scores, a couple of those rating numbers would be bumped up if I were doing it again. Sorry to have to say that I didn't get it right the first time around, but there it is. I apologize.

I didn't get the video link, but I went to your page and watched the video. It's quite good - liked it a lot, and I'm now getting pretty well hooked on that song. One thing I didn't get though; Some sections showed the vocalist singing but I didn't hear the words. Am I missing something? Don't come back and tell me I got it wrong, because I've now used up my humility allotment for the day.

Author

Hahaha, no I don't think you got the video wrong, though I'm curious to know which part?(i'm the singer btw) It may be a weird Internet connection that isn't syncing it up? Otherwise I might be the one missing something here! And of course I was not offended by the review. I actually enjoyed your critique because like you said, other people hear your music differently than you do and I love to know what others think whether it's their first listen or their 681st listen :) It was interesting to read your comments because I thought this song was a real banger when I first wrote it and though a lot of ppl really enjoyed it, there were some ppl that were indifferent and I was like, what? Why? And a lot of those ppl just couldn't explain why they thought it was OK. I think deep down this is a hit song, but it does need something more to take it to that next level. The only real differences that i can think of to make this really cook is a higher vocal and bigger drums that i'd have to record in like a silo or something, ha. Anyway, great conversation man. Really appreciate the talks! Keep rockin'

Watched the video again and it DID sound right. I don't know what was going on the other day. I thought maybe the vocal was in one channel (at the time) but I was getting both channels so... who knows.

Regardless, I've heard that song about five times now and I'm seriously hooked. You know how that goes, if you get a new album and some of the songs sound ok at first, but after a few listenings it just etches itself in your head and feels just right? This does. I dig it. So glad it came up in review. I think this may be the key to what you're describing about how some people liked it so much and others thought it was ok, but couldn't explain why. I'd bet if they heard it a few times, they would be on board with that. I think all that might have something to do with your vocal style, which I described as a subdued burn. Maybe (just a perspective based observation, here) that works better with listeners who are really paying attention instead of having it in the background while eating a sandwich and talking with the girlfriend. And overall, I think that vocal style is seriously one of the most defining and best features of the band. And again, like the video; a well edited performance video that does a great job adding imagery to enhance the song.

Thanks man. I'm glad we had this conversation. By the way, i laughed at your 'eating a sandwich' comment because we did an acoustic gig in the food court of a mall yesterday (totally uncomfortable) and 75% of the people looked pissed off like we were interrupting their dinner! Not caring AT ALL about the tunes and totally focused on their chicken wrap. Jon Bon Jovi would have even had a tough time winning that crowd over. yikes!

Author
Robert Adams

Yes, but that's not a measure of how good you are. Most of the Billboard Top Ten selling bands doing an acoustic set under same circumstances would lose out to the chicken wrap. Or consider: If Alberto Giacometti's sculpture "Walking Man," which sold for a record 104 million $ last year, were placed in a store window on 5th Avenue in NY, probably far less than 1% of passersby would give it a second glance. Of course it's, again, personal viewpoint, but... a small audience who really digs your material is better than a larger one that's less interested. You've got a very cool and artistic thing going, worthy of big recognition. Keep your determination strong.

HAAA! This is too funny! Thanks for the review on Guitars on the Open Road. Technically I wrote it as a solo effort to pitch for some car and motorcycle licensing opportunities on Broadjam. I appreciate your insight into the mix. I wish I understood Eq-ing a bit more, but I have a sophomore ear at this point. If you come up with a melody and want to sing on it let me know. I have never been able to come up with anything that moved me or flowed well for this one, possibly because it started out instrumental. Curious if you had heard this one previously when visiting my profile too. Thanks for a great review with much more detail. Best to you and ELH. - Mitchell P

Haha, man you know what was funny is I knew i had heard this song somewhere before, but i couldn't think of it until your name popped up after. I got a good chuckle out of that myself, man. Also, I have been spending even more time on reviews since your (let's just refer to it as 'The Outburst,' haha) so in hindsight, thanks for that, too. Good tune, man. Also i think i liked this mix much more because of the lack of vocals. Your instrumentals flow well together in this mix, but as you know, vocals are harder to incorporate. Ah well, keep chipping at it, man! Glad i could get another review your way.

Yes, I have those once in a while. Let's hope this is the only Outburst of 2012! Life is too short, and the world is coming to an end in December anyway.

Thanks for the great review man! The constructive comments were helpful as well. I totally hear ya. "Oh oo Whoa" was one of the first songs I had wrote w/ this project (hence the weird, hard to say song title, ha), so it was a bit of a learning experience as far as structure and recording goes. Still glad you dug it, thanks!

Hey Mitchell, sorry you took the review so personal.

I would never even think about giving a song a percentage (62% = F?). I guess I just don't think that way and I didn't think that was a crappy review. Jeez, now I think if i went through my song reviews, I'd have some F's myself (killing my self-esteem here man!).

But I don't know why you think 3's are bad? It's not a 1. I think of 3 as an average score.Maybe I'm a harder reviewer than I thought? The only 2 was on the recording, which I mentioned in the comments. I didn't leave any constructive comments because I didn't have any technical advice on how to improve the recording. I felt there was nothing wrong with the rest of the song, it just didn't float my boat. I complimented the arrangement because i thought it was the nicest part of the song, but I still labeled it as a 3. Who knows, maybe someone else thinks it's a 5? It's just my lowly opinion on one song. Don't be so hard on yourself. I DO NOT think it's a bad song. Well anyway, good luck with everything and I hope you don't take this one review as a knock, because it wasn't. Rock on! :)

Cool, understood. Sometimes I am too mathematical. I think your production sounds great though. What rig did you use to record? I am learning this stuff somewhat on my own. Been running on fumes a bit too much lately and read your review minus some sleep, so my bad. You did give me a great wake up call to re-mix some of those songs with my "newer" ears. I think having good production in today's world makes all the difference. Did you mix all that stuff yourself? I noticed you were on all the production credits on your songs that I checked out. Nice job

Author
Eric Lives Here

Hey Mitchell, no problem man. You're totally right and it kind of sucks that really good production is necessary in today's market (some a bit overproduced if you ask me!). And sometimes people can't see past the production to actually hear the guts of the song, which I may have even been guilty of here. We had messed around w/ Logic, but Pro Tools is still our go-to. My co-writer does a lot of the hands on mixing and like you, I've been trying to learn more from him as we go! But anyway, glad we could straighten this out man. That's cool.

I am using Pro tools as well. Just an 003, but I recorded a lot of that stuff with an Mbox. Your co-writer knows his EQ and Compression. I hope I can get that good soon. I am going to work on some of those older mixes and see if I can clean them up. If you don't mind I would love to get your second ear to it to see if it improves your perception whne i get time to finish and re-upload. Those songs are an older version of our group where we were partnering with a friend named Jean, but she is no longer with us. The Flavor Spanks is now myself and my co-writer and singer Lucius Stone. If you haven't heard it, check out our song Bite Me. It has a lot less instruments to fit in, and I did all the engineering rather than letting them record some stuff at their houses, like Serene. There are less parts so it was easier to mix together. It is #1 on Broadjam Earth right now. Again, sorry for the blow up. Your review has helped me. My wife and I just had a baby a few weeks ago and I am sometimes a bit cranky! Peace and Best of Luck - Mitchell P

Hell yeah man, I'd love to hear the new mixes! I actually have listened to "Bite Me" - that's a fun jam and it sounds like it fits on a TV show or something. When I think of what show it reminds me of, I'll let you know. "Bite Me - You suck a lot" ha, that was a pretty hilarious line once I figured out that's what was being said. My fave after listening to these though is probably "Downtime." I'd say lyrically I connect, but the music for that is the $#!* man. I'm not just saying that either - the instrumentation and arrangement for that is a 5 IMO. I should've reviewed that song and then we could have avoided this mess!!! ha :P Congrats on the baby btw!

Robert, thanks for the great review of "Made in the 80s!" That's awesome & I'm really glad the song resonated so much w/ you (of course that's why we as musicians do what we do, to connect w/ others musically). I generally get comments on the production quality, so that's nothing new (and I understand) but good call on cutting it shorter at the end. I was going to do that, but we had that nice ongoing solo in the background that my guitar guy really liked & I could live with it, so we left it in. Thanks for the thoughtfullness & tips you put into the review. GOod stuff & I will come back and listen this weekend!
