Story Behind The Song
Lattanzio & Tonelli put down the guitars & beats for this track 10 years ago in Australia. (huh? yeah. ) Then I stumble upon it and was just like, 'this is a classic'. i close my eyes and see this little kid that was friends with my brothers growing up... He was the only black kid in a white neighborhood.... i was probably 5 yrs old at the time, he was maybe 13, but even then it just seemed like every time anything went wrong or got stolen, he got blamed for it somehow... he used to come to our house to hide sometimes. Once he was old enough to hit the city, he got into gangs... i don't know the whole story but i heard later that he wound up getting shot.
then while i was listening to this track, the whole thing just sort of played out as pictures in my mind, so i wrote it down in pieces, like little storyboards of the filmstrip in my head...
Then later as we're recording the vocals we wind up working on a remix for Durga McBroom, one of the amazingly soulful backing singers from the Pink Floyd tours. We ask her to sing backup on Black Sun and in she comes to the Burbank apt, belting it out like the dark side of the moon in this tiny dark hallway (our little makeshift vocal booth with a panty-hose popscreen on the mikestand). but Wow. its an amazing thing to be hearing that voice come through the headphones and there's so much soul pouring out that it feels like the whole room is practically quaking, vibrating down through your bones. that is the real shit.

Lyrics
bustin' out
on a stolen cloud
who told you to feel so proud
mama said
hold your head up high
don?t let nobody see you cry
he?s the one
in handcuffs
running in slow motion
he?s the one
innocent
until the morning comes
with a black sun
like a black son
black sun
black sun
and the siren shines
on pleading eyes
caught crossing in the crossfire
outside the lines
there?s no wrong or right
everyone?s gone blind a long time ago
lights out
a warm gun
smoking in slow motion
he?s the one
innocent
until the morning comes
like a blanket
over the sky
...blindness...
everybody knows
how the story goes
it?s a judas kind of kiss
he?s the one
in handcuffs
running in slow motion
he?s the one
innocent
until the morning comes
with a black sun
black sun
black sun
the cold wars we wage
as we set the stage
everybody is to blame
the cold wars we wage
and its such a shame
everybody is to blame
...it's blindness, blindness, blindness
black sun
black sun
black sun
black sun
