Point of Incision

Song Description

Musically, the song anchors around three refrains of the opening melodic figure. In the section following the refrain's first iteration, the band plays several several repetitions of a long, odd-time figure before resolving to several measures of more straightforward 4/4 thrash. This continues into the second refrain, after which the band plays a long, repeated half-time groove with syncopated vocals. After a dramatic build-up, the baroque-inflected solo plays first over a half-time backing, then over a double-time "blast beat" pattern, with rhythm guitar and bass outlining chords through arpeggio. This segues into a 12/8 pattern followed by a 4/4 figure, all of which repeats one time, then continues to the final refrain, followed by an outro segment.

Lyrics

Purely clerical,
Drip by drip they die,
Slowly from disease.
"It's so natural"--
It's malignance.

Wide-eyed torture,
Fascination with endurance,
Sadistic fear of death,
Imprisoned, sterile health.
Buried alive,
In dirty sheets,
A shroud foreshadowing
The patient's untimely demise.

Exploratory surgery is needed
To determine why the patient's in decline.
How could he have lost the will to live
With such a full existence after all this time?

He clearly has some yet-unknown disease,
Just how it plagues him we don't understand.

Purely clerical,
Drip by drip they die,
Slowly from disease.
"It's so natural"--
It's malignance.

He seems not fearful toward his own demise,
And feels comfortable in every way he can,
Yet we feel we must do everything in our power
To keep him alive, and try to understand,
In medical terms, why he does not fear death,
How his brain can maintain such a peaceful disposition,
So cut him open, fill his mind with wires,
Science will triumph at the point of incision.

[Guitar solo.]

We believe the mind is a watch,
With logical parts we can separate out,
That someday our theory will be perfected,
Insanity will be a thing of the past.

But,
How do you define insanity,
A key aspect of thinking brilliantly?

The answers you seek will drive you to fissures
In logic that cause what you aim to cure:
Black holes in our consciousness,
Betraying simplicity, forming its core.

Note:
Most of our ideas come in blasts,
Inexplicable to the thinker.

Purely clerical,
Drip by drip they die,
Slowly from disease.
"It's so natural"--
It's malignance.
