Half a Lifetime

Story Behind The Song

Online dating sites are such a modern phenomenon that it seemed like a pertinent subject to write a song about--meeting someone through such a site and falling in love on the basis of a moving email received from them.

Song Description

The singer has waited half a lifetime and has travelled half the world looking for their soul mate and now, through a moving message received via a dating site, has found them. Though they have been hoping to find such a love for such a long time, when it actually happened it came like a bolt out of the blue, and now their quest is at an end.

Lyrics

Half a Lifetime

Half a lifetime I'd been waiting,
Half a world away from here,
Half an eye on the horizon,
Wondering where you might appear.

Half a heart that had been broken,
Half a mind to up and run,
Half the world upon my shoulders,
Thought I'd never find my special one.

It's always when you least expect it,
That bolt out of the blue
The day your message reached me
I'd all but ceased my quest for you.

Half an age it took to read it,
For half the time I couldn't see,
Half an ocean spilled from my eyes,
As I devoured the words you wrote to me.

Those lines were filled with pure compassion,
It was plain for me to feel,
We were strangers yet you knew me,
How I hoped you were for real.

It's always when you least expect it,
That bolt out of the blue
The day your message reached me
I'd all but ceased my quest for you.

Half a lifetime I'd been waiting,
Half the world had gone before,
Then you came out of the shadows,
Told me I'm the one who you adore
Yes, I'm the one who you adore
And now I need to search for you no more.
