Long, Long Ago

Story Behind The Song

I was a sophomore in college in December 1978, when I composed 'Long, Long Ago.' Earlier in the year, I'd broken up with a fellow music major who I really loved but our relationship wasn't meant to be. I dedicated this song to him -- even though it originally began as a class assignment. His comment at the time was "send it to Barbra" -- meaning Barbra Streisand. :-) Sadly, my friend passed away last year from cancer at the age of 43, leaving behind a wife and young son. The lyrics of 'Long, Long Ago' are now particularly poignant for me.

Song Description

A sultry, jazzy warmth in this song evokes memories in the listener: for some, unrequited love; for others, loves lost or love gained. The singer (Heather Blair Jones) gives the melody a sensual feel and the saxophone solo evokes the full, almost erotic quality that shivers in each note.

Lyrics

Long, long ago
I once loved a man.
He was so gentle, he was kind.
His memory lingers in my mind.

He had a smile
That would outshine the sun.
His eyes were deeper than the sea.
And he loved only me.

Now he's gone
And all that's left are memories
Stolen moments, thoughts we shared
And the joys of love so dear.

Long, long ago
I once loved a man.
He was so gentle, he was kind.
His memory lingers in my mind.

Stolen moments, thoughts we shared
And the joys of love so dear.

Long, long ago
I once loved a man.
His memory lingers in my mind.
