Poetic, powerful and strongly rendered in the tradition of singer-songwriters like Elliott Smith, Sarah McLachlan and Jann Arden, the lyrics of Timothy Harper draw his listeners into a world where the sky between the wires is painted with myths, and where passion illuminates the lives of shopkeeprs and buskers alike.

A potent blend of Celtic themes and motifs with contemporary folk, jazz and rock influences, Timothy Harper's music is defined by his own strong performances on Harp and guitar. Harper's rich, intense vocals, which invite comparison to Cat Stevens, Counting Crows and James Taylor, are the threads that tie is songs together and make them more than just another collection of harp pieces.

Biography

Born in Montreal Canada and raised in the nation's capital Ottawa, Timothy Harper began writing songs at the age of eleven when he received the gift of an acoustic guitar. He performed at talent shows and coffee houses in his teen years, but put dreams of a career in music on hold to pursue a Doctorate in English Literature. However the lure of music was simply too great to be denied, and in 1998 Harper left his PhD studies and began to build a future as a musician.

Harper's love of literature and poetry profoundly influenced his growth as a song-writer, as did his introduction to the Celtic harp in 1990. The harp, which would become the cornerstone of his distinctive sound, was also the inspiration for his work as an instrument maker -- to date he has handcrafted over 250 Celtic harps, and is perhaps the only professional harpist in the world to also be a qualified luthier.

Independently released and self-promoted in 2003, Timothy Harper's debut CD "The First Forest" went on to sell a thousand copies in its first six months. Harper performed thirty concerts at intimate venues across Ontario as he promoted the album.

Excitement began to build in the media as Timothy Harper was featured in several provincial television shows and in numerous magazine and newspaper articles. Critics called his stage performance "haunting," "passionate," and "full of magic and mischief."

Harper swiftly developed the reputation in the Canadian Music scene as a serious musical force, a savvy promoter, and, most importantly, as an artist with the knack of writing songs that work their way into the hearts of audiences.

In January 2005, Madonna producer and independent recording legend Jay King invited Harper to attend the MIDEM music conference in Cannes France as part of his entourage. At MIDEM, Harper secured licensing deals for his music in both Hong Kong and Taiwan, where his album is due to be released in autumn 2005

In addition to "The First Forest," Timothy Harper has contributed his talents as a sessional musician to four independent recordings. His second album "Soul In Flight" is due to be released in September of 2005.
