first forest

Story Behind The Song

This song probably had its start in my own experience. It has to do with how I ditched an unsatisfying life in academics in order to pursue a foolish but fantastic dream of living as a musician.

Song Description

First Forest is about rebirth, and stripping away all of the unnecessary trappings of modern life, all the masks we wear, all the roles we assume. At the bottom of the pile, all that is left is a scrap of authentic self in the heart of the first forest.

Lyrics

when I arrived here, wearing the city like a skin
grey as a freight train, thick as the walls I?d been in
over and over, changing my name in parking lots,
over and over, my hands are full but my heart is not
they say we begin here, roads are lost far to the south,
I know I began here when I tasted the fire of your mouth
and under the cedars the sky is darkened by the trees
I?m barely enough now, when I?m crouching on my knees
how old?

how old am I love? how old am I am I am I
how old am I love?
how old am I love? how old am I am I am I am I

they?re never silent, the thousand voices in
the branches above us strip away all the people I have been
they move like a river, you move like a dancer just the same,
it tastes like forever, and I?ve got a brand new name
I?ve got a brand new name
I?ve got a brand new name

they say we begin here, roads are lost far to the south,
I know I began here when I tasted the fire of your mouth
and under the cedars the sky is darkened by the trees
I?m barely enough now, when I?m crouching on my knees
how old?

how old am I love? how old am I am I am I
how old am I love?
how old am I love? how old am I am I am I am I
