Down for The Summer

Story Behind The Song

"Down for the Summer" is the title cut of Wicked Gift's 2006 "musical mini-drama". It's intended to evoke every "beach" song ever written, from "Under the Boardwalk" to "Soak up the Sun", as a means of setting up the plot-line. (We actually live at the beach, so we feel entitled to a little irony about the whole genre).

Song Description

A relentllessly upbeat latin-inflected slice of pop/rock; purporting to be a straight-forward invitation to sun-splashed fun at the beach, but wth a hint of darker undertones.

Lyrics

So I've been out on the coast, ever since the fall, here
Been turning white as a ghost, waiting on the thaw, here
Still undecided, still unrequited,
No one outside of me here even knows I play.

So I've been checkin' the lines, thought you might be callin'
I hear the mayor's resigned, wasn't that appalling?
Life here's been only just short of lonely, (and I),
Just want to be myself with someone else, Oh hey.......

So won't you please come down for the summer?
Nice if you come by the fourth of July
And as the days go 'round into summer
We'll lie in the sun and we'll let 'em go by

I know a cool little drive down beside the ocean
You got a sweet little ride, (you) got to be in motion
We'll check out the nightlife, low life and high life
Roll up each morning to the sunshine, wind, and waves

So won't you please come down for the summer,
I'll try and be done by the fourth of July
And as the days go 'round into summer
We'll lie in the sun, and we'll let 'em go by
We'll let 'em go by .......

Can't believe I'm fallin ........

So I've been asking myself, how am I gonna say this?
Don't want to blow it or else, gonna have to weigh this
But I'm so excited, you're so invited
I'll be your knight in shining irony, okay?

So won't you please come down for the summer?
Decide, and it's done by the fourth of July
And as the days go 'round into summer,
We'll lie in the sun, and we'll let 'em go by,
We'll let 'em go by
We'll let 'em go by ........
