Story Behind The Song
I wrote "You With Me," which was originally titled "I Need You With Me," in 2003. I think this is one of my wife's favorite songs--well, I hope it is, because it was written about her--when we were dating. I really like how this song came together, and is probably one of my favorite "harmony" songs on the album. It also wins the award for the longest breath required to sing a passage (the very last line of the song, with the extended hold). I sang both the lead melody and the tenor harmony in the song (Dean sang the other harmony), and I never realized before how much more difficult it is to hold a sustained note in falsetto versus your normal voice! I like how smoothly this song flows along in 6/8 time, and a lot of attention was paid to dynamics. In essence, the song is about having a dream, and realizing that you don't want to chase that dream without the one you love by your side.....and also realizing that the dream may have a limited amount of time in which it can be achieved: "It's hard to sit back when I yearn to move on; if I don't take the chance, soon the chance could be gone." Here's to all of the dream chasers out there--which I hope is everybody, as we all need one!
