Story Behind The Song
First and foremost--this is a true story about a friend of mine, Scott Gloe, and his family. Without a doubt, this is one of the most powerful songs that I have ever written. Scott was adopted at 3 weeks of age, after a tormented decision by his birth mother to give him up. He grew up in a very loving family, with two other adopted siblings. His parents were unable to have children of their own. In a tragic event, both of his parents were killed in an accident when Scott was in his early 30's. Within a year, he was having some medical concerns which warranted knowing about his family history. His wife, Kristi, began the search for his biological mother, and did find her. Since that time, they all have developed a strong bond and friendship, thereby giving them the "second chance" for being a mother and a son.

Lyrics
A dimly lit room, just her and him
Like every other night, for three weeks, she's been
Fighting with emotions she doesn't want to fight
And searching her soul between what's best and what's right
Twenty-two years young, daddy what should I do?
My child, you know that baby boy needs a daddy, too
So she calls in the nurse, chokes down her tears, and says
I'm sorry I failed you, my little man
But someday I hope that you'll understand
Why I've got to let you go
And I love you more than you'll ever know
Oh, though it hurts me, so
I don't know what else I can do, to give a second chance for me and you
He grew up fast, he grew up tall
His new mom and dad were right there for it all
Unable to have their own
They took a boy and raised a man in their humble little home
And each night they'd thank God for this miracle of love
And each say the same to their precious son
I'll never let you go
And I love you more than you'll ever know
Oh, I adore you, so
I didn't know what I would do, until this second chance for me and you
But life can be so cruel, just like they say
And one day it came and took them both away
Amid all the sorrow, amid all the pain
They sent him a gift, to make him whole again
And after all those years had passed...reunited with his mother, at last
I'm sorry, my son, I know I can't take their place
But if you'll let me in, I'll try and fill the empty space
And I'll never let you go
And I love you more than you'll ever know
Oh, I've missed you, so
My dream has finally come true, to get a second chance for me and you
