House of Fire and Stone

Story Behind The Song

I was sitting in my room, strumming the guitar and this song pretty much fell out of my head. I actually was moved to tears as I was singing it and felt like it was an important story to tell. So many women living with domestic abuse try and make excuses as to why the man is behaving the way he is. I think it's such a hush-hushed event in people's lives and it's important to write these kind of songs in hopes that it will create a change within the victim and help them to get out of a really bad situation before it becomes deadly. The concept of the broken record at the end of the song really meant a lot to me. I've had friends in these kind of relationships and every time the guy said sorry, it was like a broken record.

Song Description

This song is a look into the lives of a couple where the man is abusive to the woman. She makes lots of excuses for him but ultimately pays the price. It's a song meant for a big and emotional voiced singer.

Lyrics

In the House of Fire and Stone
Man and wife live alone
He?s trapped inside by his anger
She by her love and fear
Years go by, moods turn ugly
Black and blue, she hides on Sunday
Under heavy makeup, no one sees at all

Tells her friends he?s really tryin?
He brings her flowers, he starts cryin?
Says he?s sorry and promises
He won?t hurt their love again

HE?S GONNA CHANGE, HE (2. She) (3.He) SWEARS IT NIGHTLY
MAKES EXCUSES WHY HE MIGHT BE
STRUGLING WITH WHATEVER DEMON HE?S DRAGGIN? TO THE GROUND
LORD ONLY KNOWS HOW WELL SHE?S COPING
PRAYS EACH NIGHT AND KEEPS ON HOPING
TO FIND THE STRENGTH SHE NEEDS TO MAKE IT ON HER OWN
COZ LIVING FEELS LIKE DYING
IN THE HOUSE OF FIRE AND STONE

This neighborhood isn?t quiet
I live next door to them and find it
Hard to sleep at night for hearin?
All that?s going on
Police?d come but she?d say nothin?
?cept she?s clumsy or dropped somethin?
Stealin? glances his direction
Then lookin? to the floor

Sirens screamin? thru the night tellin? she gave up the fight
He keeps sayin? sorry and ?God, what have I done?
Sad their story?s not the only one, somewhere the fire keeps raging on
Somewhere a broken record?s playing on
