Story Behind The Song
I knew the soldier depicted in this song, who died in the Iraq War. I also know his mother. The town honored him with his name on the theater's marquee and a parade in his honor. Flags were distributed to the people lining the streets. As a mother myself, I could feel the grief of a parent losing a child in a war. My own two children are 21 and 25. It might well have been them. The song is a tribute to any soldier who has given their life in any war serving for the freedom of our country. This song which is a true story, has probably been played out throughout our entire country with many other service men and their families.

Lyrics
HOMETOWN HERO
Verse One
Years have flown swiftly by,
Your child memories
Are enough to make me cry.
You heard your country call,
You gave the greatest gift
Greatest sacrifice of all.
Chorus
You're my Hometown Hero, you see
Your name's on the theater's marquee.
All the flags waved proud
As you made your final way..
through the streets of your hometown
You're the Hometown Hero
My tears flow for you
My Hometown Hero, you see.
Verse Two
Now you lead the parade
Your picture stands so tall
I remember when you were small
Marching so proudly then
With Scouts and baseball teams
Wish those days did never end
Chorus
You're my Hometown Hero, you see
Your name's on the theater's marquee
All the flags waved proud
As you made your final way
Through the streets of your hometown
You're the Hometown Hero
My tears flow for you
My Hometown Hero, you see
Bridge
From Heaven looking down
You can see my pride
Hiding my grief locked inside
And when will we meet again
Like a long lost friend
That seems like forever
Chorus
You're my Hometown Hero, you see
Your name's on the theater's marquee
All the flags waved proud
As you made your final way
Through the streets of your hometown
You're the Hometown Hero
My tears flow for you
My Hometown Hero, you see.
You're the Hometown Hero
My tears flow for you
My Hometown Hero, you see
