Story Behind The Song
I was vacationing with a group of friends down in Mexico, and I got up early one morning and went for a walk on the beach. The beach was deserted, the morning was warm and sunny, and there was virtually no one in site. I started to think about how peaceful it was at that moment, and how hectic it would become within a couple of hours.
There was an Island about a mile out from the mainland, and suddenly I wanted to be that island ? near enough to watch the day unfold, but far enough away to be left alone for a while.
Mix in thoughts about the previous evening, an old girlfriend, the general lack of direction my life had at the time, and the fact that the first thing I saw when I got back up on the street, was an empty Tequila bottle, and you've got a song.

Lyrics
bottle
this morning i?m an island
sitting just off the coast
of last night?s empty promises and
yesterday?s ghost
i still let her haunt me
when you won?t let me in
now i?m sinking down to seeing her
again
tomorrow i?ll be sorry
today i?m only here
and half way gone
i need a bottle
to wash up on shore
i need a bottle
that isn?t empty anymore
i need a big lie
to keep me down
i need to come back someday
when i am not around.
tonight i?ll be a hero
for a little while and then
you will fall asleep and leave me here
alone with what i really am
empty and afraid
that all the choices i have made
are keeping me out at sea
i need a bottle
to wash up on shore
i need a bottle
that isn?t empty anymore
i need a big lie
to keep me down
i need to come back someday
when i am not around.
ain?t it funny how the ocean waves
hello and goodbye
all at once and in between
the bottom and the sky
if i let it pull me under
i wonder
would you wonder why
