Story Behind The Song
?Anna? is a memory of mine from childhood. I had grandparents that lived on a farm in rural Oregon, and every now and then my family would spend the weekend helping out on the farm.
The time spent there would usually take place in the summer, and every evening just about dusk I used to love to sit on the porch (it was a big wooden ?farmhouse porch?, and I was too little to be of much help with the evening chores) which faced the road that ran by the house, to watch the sun set over the fields of dirt, wheat, and hay.
Every so often I would see a young girl (somewhat older than me) walking up the road just before sunset. She didn?t walk very fast, and she seemed sad to me because she always had her hands in her pockets, and she rarely even looked up even when cars would pass by her.
I never thought to ask my grandmother who she was, because I was just a little kid having fun on the farm, and she never stopped to wave or say hello (she probably didn?t even know I was there) so she has always remained faceless. From time to time I have even wondered if I just imagined the whole thing, or superimposed a scene from a movie on to a memory of that old farm.
Either way it?s still a memory, and I decided to write a song about that memory, and that girl. Since I don?t know here real story I made one up, but instead of trying to figure out why she was so lonely and despondent, I decided I would ask her why instead.
In my mind she still walks along that road every summer evening just before sunset, and someday maybe I?ll will go back there and see her again. Maybe then I will finally get some answers. But that?s a different song altogether.

Lyrics
emptied out anna
and so the day
and so is the night
so much the same in your life
all that you were
is not what you are
a half heavy moon to a falling star
emptied out anna
what is your pain
who put that whole in your head
lost like a tear in a bucket of rain
how should your story be read
a crack in the wall
is a room with a view
the room is your heart
and it?s breaking in two
emptied out anna
what is your pain
who put that hole in your head
lost like a tear in a bucket of rain
how should your story be read
hand over hand over
time after time
after all you?ve been through i can see
you?re closer to jesus
all that you are
is not what you are
a half heavy moon
to a falling star
emptied out anna
what is your pain
who put that hole in your head
lost like a tear in a bucket of rain
how should this story be read
