Story Behind The Song
My wife (to be) asked me to write a song for our wedding. She wanted to Dance with her brothers at the reception, but couldn't find a slow song that was appropriate.
All the slow songs she found were either too mushy, or too sad.
I decided to write about a tree in the yard. People grow up around it, everything around the tree seems to change... but the tree still stands.
She loved the song and I played it at our wedding.
Not only did she get to have a nice dance with her brothers, but it was also moving to see aunts and uncles and parents dancing to this song at the reception as well.
I'm happy to say that it's been played at every family wedding since.

Lyrics
THE OLD TREE
(Words and Music By Jim Paquette 1993)
VERSE 1:
Today as the world takes on a different face
We're moving to a better place
My thoughts return back home
In the yard just like the old tree grows
Everyone around it knows
That we'd all stay together
There were times that weren't fair
When we?d all earned our share of feeling down
CHORUS:
But that old tree still grows in the yard
Through dozens of storms it had fought real hard
We never had to worry bout' it fall in down
'Cause their ain?t nothing stronger that?s been here longer
And the roots to that old tree stay firm in the ground
VERSE 2:
Today, it might seem like we're moving on
But our bond is only getting strong
And growing even more
In the yard just like the old tree grew
Everyone around it knew
That we'd all stand forever
Even though we felt the strain
In times we thought the pain was just too much
(Repeat CHORUS)
The roots to that old tree stay firm in the ground
