The Last Supper, Show

Story Behind The Song

No story. I just think Willie would blend into the painting nicely.

Song Description

A guy is drinking in a lounge/restaurant where the live music is about to start. He recognizes the singer but can't place him. He goes outside to sober up a little and sees, what he believes to be, the singer in the bar's picture, in a stained glass window of "The Last Supper" ina church across the street. He realizes that the guy playing in the bar and the guy in the picture are the same person, Willie Nelson. In the picture Willie is playing for Jesus at The Last Supper. Coincidentally, there is a sign on stage announcing that WIllie plays the last supper show at the lounge/restaurant at 8:00 PM every night.

Lyrics

?The Last Supper Show? by Jim Miller copyright 2005

E A
When I saw the guitar player, with is beard and his long hair
B7 A E
I thought I recognized him, but I didn?t know from where
E A
It wasn?t from the movies, hadn?t seen him on T V
B7 A...Aus4..A E
Where I?d seen that face before, just wouldn?t come to me

E A
I wanted to stay and listen, but I knew I didn?t dare
B7 A E
Thought I?d better go outside, and get a little air
E A
As I left I saw a sign letting everybody know
B7 A...Aus4..A E
That at 8 PM nightly, he played the Last ...........Supper, Show

A Asus2 E
At a church across the street, where they were holding evening mass
A Asus2 E
I saw his picture in the window, up there in the stained glass
B7 A...Aus4..A E
They must have made the window at least a forty.............years a-go
B7 A..Asus4..A E
Cuz he looked a lot younger, and wore ................ unusual clothes

E A
I stared up at the window and the image that I saw
B7 A E
I was sure it was the same guy, that was playing in the bar
E A
He was standing next to Jesus, his gui-tar ready to go
B7 A...Aus4..A E
It?s Willie Nelson up there.... playing the Last............ Supper, Show

D G
There was no way to deny it, you could see it from afar,
A G D
Willie Nelson at The Last Supper, playing the gui-tar.
G
Jesus must have liked it when he heard all of Willie?s best
A G D
(Willie?d stick with his set-list he?d never take re-quests).

D G
Willie?s been around a while, at least it seems so
A G D
If it that?s him in the picture, playing the Last Super show
G
When the Angles Country Band sang Rock of Ages Cleft for me
A G D
Willie played lead gui-tar, and some-times the tambou-rine

A G D
No wonder Willie plays guitar and sings the songs he does...........
A G A.....Asus4...A
Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams gave him help from a-bove
D G
Seems Willie got his start a few mil-lenniums ago
D A G D
Playing good old country music at the Last Supper Show

D G
So that explains his grizzled look and worn out old guitar
A G D
Two thousand years On The Road Again is bound to make you tired
G
And it takes some patience posing for all those pictures in stained glass
A G......Gsus2...
But it gives the folks something look at while they?re setting on
..G D
their....... pew at mass

D G
If you ever find yourself in church and the sermons dragging on
A G D
Take a look around the room for the Holy man of song
G G/E
And if the guy that made the windows reads the good book like I do
A G D
You?ll see Jesus in the picture and you?ll see Willie Nelson....... too.
