Story Behind The Song
The song has its basis in the relationship of my parents. My father was prone to party late nights and spent an evening in Austin, Texas. He did not call and my mother was up pacing half the night. When he came home, she said to him "the least you could have done is called!" His response was "there weren't any phones in Austin."
Song Description
This song demonstrates a battle of the wills between a wife who stays home waiting up for her husband and the spouse who strays. On the one hand, she is too proud to confront him; on the other, she is too weak to stand up for herself. Driving is used as a metaphor for the communication difficulty she is experiencing.

Lyrics
You don?t even call to say you?ll be late
You don?t even care to check the time
You don?t even swear there?s no telephone in town
No you?re a little too stupid to tell a good lie
For all I know you could be roadkill
Or maybe you?re just messin? around
If I wasn?t always right I?d come looking for you
But I?m a little too desperate to be that proud
Chorus 1:
But you keep me waiting here like a car that never leaves the garage, and
Baby we?re a ?66 mustang overheating in a parking lot
And it?s because you
You never let me, You never let me drive
You don?t even stand there like you?re guilty
You don?t bring me flowers or wine
Baby if you weren?t such a consistent fuck
I wouldn?t let you think I was fine
Chorus 2:
But you keep me idling here like a car that never leaves the garage, and
Baby we?re a ?66 mustang getting passed on the right
And it?s because you
You never let me, You never let me drive
Bridge:
I will, I will, I will someday
I will, I will, I will someday
And you will, you will, you?ll watch me drive away
In your ?66 mustang
Baby can?t you see that I?m leaving?
And I really mean it this time
You say I?ve always been all gut and no spine
Am I stupid enough to believe that you?re right?
Chorus 3 (x2):
But you keep me idling here like a car that never leaves the garage, and
Baby we?re a ?66 mustang stalled at a green light
And it?s because you
You never let me, You never let me drive.
