Sleepwalking

Story Behind The Song

I actually sleepwalk. This is exciting news to me, even still. It doesn't happen very often, but I am fascinated by the fact that my body is able to separate itself from brain functions that are supposed to prevent it from moving while I am at rest. My fascination with the subsconcious--with those things we don't seem to know or notice about ourselves--comes out in this song. My husband also once told me that many times when I am awake, I am not present. I get a distant stare in my eyes he's only seen on the faces of military snipers.

Song Description

It's hard to balance the mundane with the severely interesting in life. Some days we feel like we are wandering around without a purpose--others, we accomplish so much we wonder why we couldn't have done any of it the day before. It's those days where we have no purpose that the narrator focuses on here. Those days of mindless wandering and glazed looks in our eyes. Those days when we'd be better off asleep.

Lyrics

Baby says I have my thousand-yard stare back again
My sniper stance, my stillness, the appearance of grace under pressure
Yeah my chest doesn?t move when I breathe, if I?m even breathing at all

Chorus:
And I sleep while the TV is on
Through beautiful thunderstorms
And you say that my eyes are open sometimes
But I feel like I?m sleepwalking all day long

Baby says I?m stolid as a rock, solid as a steel beam
Yup, he could put his tongue to me and it would stick
I could take a kick to the head, and never think anything of it

Repeat Chorus

Bridge:
God?..God?.God?.God
I?m just another deer in the headlights
I?m waiting, God
Are you going to take me away, away, away, away?
God

(Backup vocals: Life is just these shots, life is just these shots at happiness)

Baby says I?m as perfect as stained glass
With every shade of the rainbow represented in my iris
I let the sun come in and I don?t flinch
I swallow a sliver of life like it?s death

Repeat Chorus

Give me rest, give me peace
Give me one last breath please
Nighty night
Sleeping tight
Give me rest, give me peace
