Alice

Story Behind The Song

I love Lewis Carroll. Plus, I've been in a number of strange places and times. So, "Alice" just fell out of my pen in the late 1970's. I don't hold true to the books. But, Carroll's images play dear to my heart and my lfe.

Song Description

This is a commentary on life and how I (and you?) fit into it, as related to Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Lyrics

(Verse 1)
Been a long time singing and a long time dreaming.
Lord, the dreams I've dreamed could fill the sky.
Wish on four-leaf clovers found in a magic meadow
In a time when I seldom wondered why.

(Chorus)
Been like a looking-glass, staring back at nothing.
See it shimmer in the evening light.
Alice reaches out her hand and beckons me to follow.
It's the only place I ever do things right.

(Verse 2)
Rabbits chase elusive time, disappear in shadows.
Walk ahead, you'll only end behind.
Little men who grow, and then ... coat themselves in armor.
Pass the cake, and then you cut it fine.

(Repeat Chorus)

(Verse 3)
Run so fast. Run so far. The next square's surely nearer.
See the Red Queen running like the wind.
And if you puff, and if you try, you never will quite catch her.
And where you stop is where you first began.

(Repeat Chorus)

(Verse 4)And on the full-spread table sat a feast to feed a king.
It seems at last you've found the sense in it all.
But, soup's for swimming, mutton laughs: you never eat a thing.
And, off somewhere you may hear your mother's call.

(Ending)
Which is real and which is not. Many times I've wondered.
And, where's the person who should really know?
Lock me away or let me stay, it really doesn't matter.
Oh, I take my world wherever I may go.

Alice reaches out her hand and beckons me to follow.
Oh, I take my world wherever I may go.
