Story Behind The Song
I grew up with an abusive jerk for a stepfather. He ended up dead, and my mother killed him in self defense. After she pulled the trigger 3 or 4 times, she still didn't know he was already dead, so she tried to run away from him by cutting through the double-ended bathroom where I had locked my 10 year old self, and I was too completely frozen with fear to open the door when she frantically jostled the knob, crying and screaming. I couldn't move.

Lyrics
A little girl plays in her room
She puts on Mommy's clothes
But Mommy uses her makeup
So the bruises won't show
A little boy sits in his room
With his head in his hands
He doesn't want to be scared no more
Why can't they just understand?
AAaaahhhhhhhh!!!!
Tears in their eyes
Frozen up inside
No place left to hide
When Mommy and Daddy fight
Leave Mommy alone
'Cause now that Daddy's home
She's tryin' to survive
You learn it as you grow
