J.M.Sutherland is the brain child of Bass-centric GROOVETANK . A veteran of Guitar and Bass, Classical education in private lessons from age 11 to 14, started his first band at 15 and very quickly made a mane for him self locally in the san diego area, Switching to bass at around 17 after discovering a natural ability with the fingers on the right hand. Very good on Guitar, he is WORLD CLASS on bass and continually focuses on his style and technique as the backdrop and driving creative force for all his grooves and songwriting. From Steve Harris metal fingering to Robert Trujillo heavy FunkSlap, he seamlessly blends a heavy slap / funk style with lighting fast metal and rock styles to create a definitive and very unique style. AN on going project named GROOVETANK is JMS and his Drummer, Ed Wiley. He hails from a progressive jazz background and is the G in their grooves, his world-class style compliments JIM perfectly .... they are a world class heavy funk rhythm section.
