Hi,
Thanks for your review of Wise Old Owl. That's the first time anybody's told me "not to change a thing"! I'm often sceptical of that kind of feedback, but I see we have similar influences, genres and you obviously know how to make good music! Only a pity that we're not closer geographically. Expect a friend request!

Hi Michael,
Thanks for your review of Sorry that I Made You Cry. I'm encouraged you like the melody. My vocals were not great when I recorded this due to health problems, but I hope to re-record it later. I note your point about reverb. I'm still a bit green when it comes to recording! Best wishes Phil.

Hi Jess,
Thanks for your encouraging review of A Lifetime Ago. I found it difficult to know what category to put it in, so I understand you questioning its listing in soundtracks. Yes, the vocals are not adequate - I've been ill for some time and it was the best I could achieve. But I hope to rerecord the song soon, once my vocals are back up to scratch. Considering your own background I'm honoured to receive such a good review! Cheers, Phil.

Thanks for your encouraging feedback on Fiction Girl. I'm glad you think it's original in style, that you like the vocals and would like to hear more from me. Yes - the vocals are not as good as they should be. It was recorded a couple of years ago for a cometition, and I was ill at the time. Hopefully vocal issues should be resolved in the re-record. Every success!

Hi Kathy, thanks for your review of Empty Echoing Man (which you entitled Lonely Island). Glad you liked the harmonica! To me that's an important hook in the piece. The song was recorded 18 months ago for a competition whilst I was still ill - which explains the variations in pitch. But thanks for your comments about the timbre. I double-tracked the whole song and added reverb to disguise how poor my voice was at that time! That's probably why you can't make out all the words. As soon as my voice is back on top, I'll rerecord and hopefully people should see a difference. Thanks again and warmest wishes. Phil

Hi, Phil - I am always cautious when I talk about the vocals. Recently I got a very high score on one of my songs and the one critique was the range of the song did not seem to be a good range for the vocalist. I am the vocalist and I pick the range. I listened to your song "Sorry that I made you Cry". You're right - vocals there are good. By the way, that song is a song every female can appreciate and you do it well. You might check out my song "Who Knows You". I wrote it with the thought it was a song I would like my husband to sing to me - he is not a singer so he never will - but you might appreciate it. Have a great day and I do like your work. Kathy

Thanks for your congratulations! I'm really quite overcome by what's happened with the charts - particularly the 37-50 chart. I've now had five songs in that chart, the highest being Sun Boy Blues (currently at No 4) and at one point I had four songs placed at numbers 7, 8, 9 and 10! If only I could do the same in the national charts, then I'd be happy! Sorry for the delay, I've had all sorts of hospital appointments over the past two weeks. Hi Minster Glenda, thanks for your encouraging review of my song Sorry that I Made You Cry. I've just been listening to your songs. As well as having strong vocals yourself, I do like your arrangements - and you obviously have a good collection of backing singers to support you - (unless of course you overdubbed them yourself!)
Keep up the good work. Phil

Hi Brian, Thanks for your review of Wise Old Owl. I'm beginning to realise that what works as contemporary folk in the UK does not work in the US. True, the song was not written to be a commercial success, but I value all pointers as to how to do so. It's based on the older verse with refrain structure, and so does not have a chorus or bridge. But I fully take your points about how this would improve it's commercial viability. I've never awarded 5 points for thoroughness before to a reviewer, but I must to you because I've never had such a helpful and sensitive review! All I can say is Thanks! Phil.

Thank you so much Phil. I am no pro, just a writer like you. Thanks for your kind words. I try to be sensitive when reviewing other writer's works (don't always succeed). I know how it feels, but also want to share what little I have learned and help someone else save learning the hard way the way I mostly did. Glad if I could help. Keep up the good work.

Just been listening to your music - there are some lovely songs there. I think you're under-selling your voice - you have a good voice. If you can find anyone to help you, you would be well-advised to get help producing some more accomplished backing tracks - some people at Broadjam can be rather blunt in their reviews - so don't be upset - they mean well! Again, every success. Phil

Thanks to all of you who are reviewing my songs - there have been a lot of very relevant points raised about the production. I hope to re-record eventually, but at the moment I'm retraining my voice. If you can - do please provide feedback on aspects of the song itself (structure, language, imagery, subject matter) as this will help me more at this stage of development of my work. But I'm grateful to you all.

Thanks for your review of Empty Echoing Man. Yes, I agree the vocals are muddy - that's caused by a mistake in production. But I think I'll start a campaign for a "work in progress" category so people don't just focus on production! But I take your comments - your songs show you know an awful lot about production!

Thanks also for your review of Sun Boy Blues. On this one I have to totally agree with you. This was a development of a short ballad, and an attempt to work through the concept more thoroughly. But you're right - it needs a complete rethink! Phil
