Will Sims

Baltimore-based alternative rock and pop artist, Will Sims, creates themes that focus strongly on both romantic and social relationships, and the difficulties faced in our modern society. His rich, powerful music reaches out to connect on a personal level while still maintaining infectious components that make his songs stick in your head.

Sims' music echoes the work of the 90's alternative rock movement by incorporating various genres of music as a palette to paint different styles of imagery into his music. The vocal styles of Rob Thomas are woven into his work, which are vocal melodies that both compliment, and are complimented by, the music. The diversity of his voice allows him to traverse from high energy, Foo Fighters-esque rock songs, to soft, Goo Goo Dolls style ballads that reach for deeply buried emotions. His songs also have a grand scale to them, built to fill arenas in a similar scale to that of a U2 or Oasis anthem.

Hey! I went back and listened again. The quality of the mix is really solid, I really think what stands out to me most is the drum tracks. They sound programmed, like they're a little too "on the grid" in some places, as opposed to a lot of the other instrumentation which sounds like it's being played by a person. An example is at the 1:24 and 1:51 it sometimes felt like the drums were almost off time because everything else has it's own feel and flow to it and the whole time the drums are right on the click.

I don't know how you actually did the recordings on this song, if it was a live drummer, the drums still feel off in some places. It's kind of lacking the dynamics that a real drummer would bring to it. Every snare hit on the track sounds the same but a real snare will sound slightly different every time you hit it. Same with the hi hat, it just has the same intensity every time you hear it.

I have heard some tracks that sound like it's programmed drums but there's a little more time put into making it seem like a real drummer is playing, It's totally doable to get it to sound almost identical. I've just been in a lot of recording sessions with live drums and I know how hard it is to get them to sound great, and that's maybe where I felt having a profession engineer would help in that area of recording.

Those were my main thoughts, guitars and keys sound great. Sadly my speakers don' get the best bass so it's hard to comment on that sometimes.

Hope this helps, I just want everyone to find some form of success.

Hey Will,
Thanks for the speedy response! I hear what you're saying about the drum tracks. It is software and I do spend some time editing the midi files not only to fit the tune but to adjust timing and dynamics. Used to record live drums but it was too frustrating on a couple of levels. Thanks again for your input, not many people are willing to be as honest. Much appreciated!!

Thank you for time and honesty in reviewing "Don Juan Triumphant"
You are correct that this a "Demo" I have found that Broadjam is an
excellent sounding board for new material as studio time is at a premium
it helps me decide what projects to shelf and what to keep. All the best. Scott

Thank you, Will for the review of What A Fool Am I...it is a dated recording and have learned much since then. I like the tune and the message so I leave it posted on Broadjam. Glad you enjoyed it.
Wishing you success in your career,
Peace, Robert

That's super cool. Everything I say comes from a place of love and support for other artists out there trying to make it in some way in this industry!
