“Serpent Trains” by Andrea Guskin is the sort of track that one can happily listen to for hours on end. The eclectic mix of musical styles helps to build a dream-like atmosphere that is both alluring and thought provoking. Indeed, the use of purely organic instruments is a masterstroke, and professional instrumentation ensures that everything, from the wonderful upright bass to the enchanting guitars, fits perfectly into the soundscape. The ethnic percussion provides a solid backbone and gives the piece a world-music quality that is reminiscent of Tori Amos in places. I like Andrea’s vocals too, particularly the phrasing which is distinctive, without being over-intrusive... Andrea Guskin is an outstanding artist with a unique brand of edgy folk music that’s easy to listen to, yet highly addictive. (JP)

Bio

The dreamy folk/internationally-flavored songs of Andrea Guskin, started off in the rural but radical Yellow Springs, Ohio. After completing a degree in painting at Antioch college and playing congas in a local folk-rock band, she moved to the East Village, NYC and found her songs in a borrowed classical guitar in the east village.

She’s always been singing, in all the local plays, train stations and on benches in rural Buddhist monasteries; but it wasn’t until she borrowed this beat-up guitar that the songs came together to create a unique sound. Her visual sensibility merged into the lyrics…the world around her connected to the songs with emotion and the paintbrush was traded in for the nylon strings.

Andrea’s been recording and performing in NYC and the Bay Area ever since, releasing her current CD at CBGB’S Gallery 313 in February 2003. The CD "Serpent Trains" was produced by Elie Massias of Lunchbox Recording Studios and captures a transformation from straight ahead folk/pop to songs with unusual world/trance rhythms, complex lyrics and a distinctive character of their own.

Her voice has also been featured in Bklyn Loft’s "Loft Sounds", a collection of Brooklyn’s finest emerging composers and vocalists.
The song is "Slippery", the composer is Stephen Bagley of AVOCADO.

She is currently living in Oakland, California.
