Story Behind The Song
This piece was composed over a span of three days in December of 2004. It grew out of an exploration of all of the combinations and juxtapositions of timbres I could make with a newly acquired library (GPO) of sampled instrument sounds for use with my sequencing software. As a brass player, I was curious to see what the sampled brass players could do by testing the limits of their ranges. The resulting composition was drawn from my experience, but I was so immersed in the sounds themselves that the interpretation of experience which gave those sounds form was operative on a subconscious level during the process of composition. Only upon subsequent reflection was I able to identify the experiences that influenced the form giving process. After writing the first and third movements, I knew that I needed a movement between them to act as a centerpiece. The labels ?Incarnatus?, ?Crucifixus? and ?Resurrexit? were given to the three movements well after they were composed. I applied those labels with hesitation because of my respect for the corresponding sections of the Bach B-minor Mass. Nevertheless, the historic events referenced by those three labels influence everything I do, even when I am not consciously aware of it. When I ask myself the questions, ?What was I thinking?, Why did I write that??, I can only loosely connect my experiences with the forms that took shape.
