Bats and Butterflies

Story Behind The Song

I was on Mackinac Island in Michigan where they don't allow cars, just horses and bicycles. During the day riding my bike around the island there were hundreds of beautiful butterflies. At night on the way home from a gig, the bats would swoop around your shoulders and between your legs. I didn't want to leave. I was prompted to write this song after returning home...I fell asleep on the couch while watching a vampire movie...and thought I saw a bat in the house. It was cold and I was wishing I was back on the island.

Song Description

A wonderful island vacation, sun and sand and warm weather...but now it's just a memory. Now the singer is filled with longing to go back to those happy times.

Bats & Butterflies

Thought I saw a tiny bat
Flying 'round inside my room
It might have been that movie I watched, but I don't think so...
He circled around my head
He may have just lost his way
Wondered in from the cold to get warm and thought he'd stay
It was such a chilly night
And so I lit the fire
Then I sent him on his way now I can't sleep tonight

Just a bat among the butterflies
I remember that day
I can still hear you calling me
No matter how much time I've been away
No matter how long I've been away

I saw a Monarch butterfly
Trying hard to get in my room
Might have been my imagination, but I don't think so...
Don't you know it's cold in here
Lend me your wings & let me fly away
I need the sun across the water, take me there and let me stay
Where kites dance in the wind
Butterflies kiss my skin
I am not alone but I am an island away

There were bats, there were butterflies
I remember that day
I can still hear you calling me
No matter how much time I've been away
No matter how long I've been away

I felt a wing brush across my face
There's a presence in my room
Might have been my imagination, but I don't think so...
Sitting here on my bed and thinking
I just found my way
Wandered in from the cold just to get warm... and thought I'd stay
Suitcase packed and overflowing
Guess I'll have to leave some things behind
I'll be back again but I don't want to leave today

There were bats, there were butterflies
I remember that day
I can still hear you calling me
No matter how much time I've been away
No matter how long I've been away
There were bats, there were butterflies
Do you remember that day
I can still hear you calling me
No matter how much time I've been away
No matter how long I've been away
No matter how long I'm away

(Like butterflies, we seek the light
Like bats in the dead of night
We're all just feeling our way through the darkness)
