Story Behind The Song
It's true that there is deep satisfaction in knowing Christ in this life. It completes our earthly experience with a sense of purpose and understanding, adding peace and joy.
But the other side of that coin is that this life isn't our reward. We struggle. We stumble. We go without. But we learn to accept that when we realize our real reward still awaits us.
We may sacrifice in this life, but we are earning a reward that the world doesn't have faith to see. That's the historical christian perspective and it allows us to embrace the irony of self-denial as an expression of hope.
