Lyrics
Dad's truck sits in the driveway
Been there since late last week
All his relatives have come to visit
And the neighbors on his street
Dad's gone to a better place they say
Been away a couple of days
He might be at a brush fire
Saving homes out near LA
But his mom is really quiet
He can't tell the reason why
When he asks "Mom, what's the matter" she says
Nothing son....just got something in my eye
Maybe it's the weather
Or something in the air
That makes them all so quiet
In the dark clothes that they wear
His grandpa doesn't want to play
Just stares out at the clouds
And he looks like he wants to hit somebody
Whenever people talk too loud
And if he didn't know better
He thinks his grandpa's gonna cry
And the old man sees him watching and says
Don't mind me boy...just got something in my eye
Then a big red fire truck drives up
And a big black man steps out
He has bandages all over
But he walks up without a doubt
He says: your poppa saved my life son
And three more of his crew
But he went back for another
There was nothing we could do...
They all look down at the little boy
Who finally understands
His daddy won't be with him
As he learns to be a man
And he thinks he's got to be grown up
And he'll give it his best try
And if anyone should ask him if he's sad he's gonna say
I've just got something in my eye
