mixed up old maid

Story Behind The Song

This is a song about falling in love with a woman on the west coast, after just getting out of a relationship that was really stale. I was sitting on the plane to go back home to New York flying over the rockie mountains and remembering our first "I love you". It was as the song says like a coming into grace, feeling so in love, but not trusting myself, and having an intense job and being a single mother, like a mixed up old maid..I was realy surprised and happy, but confused that I feeling this again.

Lyrics

mixed up old maid
All the way back home, from the city by the bay
Couldn?t eat couldn't sleep because of the refrain
Over and over in my head those words you said
You said I love you
Ya you said it too
I know you said it too

In my life I know I haven't been a saint
Those wagging tongues have filled me with self-hate
But following my heart the path is never straight
You know that too
Ya you, know that too
I know you know that too

Oh it's a coming in to grace
But I'm a messed up old maid
And it's blowing me away
Blows me away

All the way back home from LA on a plane
Flying high up over the rocky mountain range
Feels like a metaphor for all those games we've played
You thought that too
Ya you thought that too
I know you've thought that too

I can feel the fear this culture makes
When the old maid card gets dealt out in a game
To a girl who felt she grew up rather straight
You felt that too
Ya you, felt that too
I know you felt that too

Oh it's a coming in to grace
But I'm a messed up old maid
And it's blowing me, away
Blows me away
This old maid
Blows me way
When the old maid card gets dealt to you
How can you help but feel that too ?
