Story Behind The Song
The regents and upper administration at EMU tried to crush the unions on campus in 2006. It became very apparent that this was a classist move driven by their upper class status juxtaposed with the working class students and hard working faculty.
Song Description
Classist and elitist people view the world through stereotypes of people "beneath" them and seldom take time to see others as people.

Lyrics
Flight of the Emu (How can it be?)
© D. Mark Ragg, 2006
How can it be,
When you focus your eyes there?s so much you just cannot see.
How can it be,
That the look in your eyes, makes my eyes desperate to weep,
And how can it be,
That your walk right on by and I feel that I just can?t be seen,
There?s never air, under your wings, tell me why you let that be.
How can it be,
That you open your mouth and I find I can no longer breathe.
How can it be,
That the values you state, describe things I just cannot see.
And how can it be,
That you put out those lies insisting I have faith in the leap.
There?s never air, under your wings, tell me why you let that be.
I see a bird who never can fly
Destined to walk on the ground,
So out of touch with things that might lend,
Some lift, some loft, but that bird won?t bend.
Oh, Oh, how can that be.
There?s never air, under your wings, tell me why you let that be.
How can it be,
That you don?t know my name, but I see your hate start to seethe.
How can it be,
That you live the high life, while begrudging the things that I need.
And how can it be,
That you?re spending so much, just hoping to see me bleed.
There?s never air, under your wings, tell me why you let that be.
There?s never air, under your wings, tell me why you let that be.
