Song Description

88 is a song capturing a moment of feel good blues. For all the things that get in the way, 88, for me at least, is a 3 minute moment of "fuck it, I feel great!"

Story Behind the Song

This song was written during a time in my life of late nights and late mornings. I quit my job that year and had just finished my degree at the University of Western Ontario and there was a lot of uncertainty for the future but I had my studio that I had built for myself and some local artists at the time, and in there I always felt at home. I had also just come back from a month tour of the States, and saw a lot of great things on that road trip (ie. the lyric "Walking Savannah lines with that waterside on my mind." There was music in the streets there. One of the street performers that stood out to me was this man in a wheelchair who had lost his legs. His only instruments were his hands and his voice, but as he clapped and sang old Chicago blues for a world that walked by all I could think of was "This, right now, is Blues." I sat with him for a few minutes and gave him $10. We talked and he laughed and smiled, and then we both went our separate ways. This song was written a week after I made it back home from that.

Playlists this song is on:

Aw Man, it feels so good to be alive right now. And aw damn, it feels so good to be high right now. Aw Man, it feels so good to be alive right now. And aw damn, it feels so good to be high, high, high.

(Verse 1)
Woke up feeling great again, I know it's late 'cause that sun is setting but, that don't bother me much. Look, I ran myself in the ground, but I'm not dead yet, so while I still got time on my clock someone grab a camera - to snap this fuckin' kid before this kid fuckin' snaps, I'm half off the edge, lost my top, now I'm blacklisted. Just bumping beats out the back like a mad misfit, I'm sorry Mister if that's not how you're living but, I walk on a tight rope with this tight mic in a tight fist, and you know that we spit right on those mic nights just like this, yeah - so lucky dice rolling now, 7's on the table, it's leaving me hoping to double up, got my life but can I take one on the way out.

(Verse 2)
Put on a groovy tune and play that shit 'til the morning, speakers bumping, hip hop thumping. I'm hopping from stages and burning up papers, I mean, I make nothing from something - those were the days just kicking at the Days Inn, walking Savannah lines with that waterside on my mind. Take what I give, get what I take, I turn up the verb in the burbs let the track wait - breathe it out *breath*
