Song Description

A woman calls her lover by someone else's name while she's half asleep and becoming romantic.

Story Behind the Song

I started out writing a romantic, sensual ballad and the female character kicked me in the groin when I least expected it.

Lyrics

Another Man's Name

We were sleeping last night
Felt you holding me tight
Felt the warmth of your breath on my skin.
In the darkness I heard
Your soft, loving words
I was feeling the passion again
For a while we’d been missing
The thrill in our kissing
After all these years things just ain’t the same
You were not quite awake
And I felt my heart break
When you whispered another mans name.

Is it someone you love
Or someone you dreamed of
Or someone in something you read.
Is the fantasy real
Is it something that you feel
Or is it all just in your head?
If I asked you would you lie
Would you have to deny
Your love is slipping through my fingertips.
In your kiss I just faced
The terrible taste
Of another man’s name on your lips.

Do I make you explain,
Cry or cuss, or go insane?
Should I risk what I can’t bear to lose
I could just draw you near
Pretend I didn’t hear
I could try, but there’s really no use.

In the soft gray of dawn
With my thoughts racing on
As the sun rose, then, I saw the light
I was just thinking of
How to win back your love
From the phantom that you loved last night.

Is it someone you love
Or someone you dreamed of
Or someone in something you read.
Is the fantasy real
Is it something that you feel
Or is it all just in your head?
If I asked you would you lie
Would you have to deny
Your love is slipping through my fingertips.
In your kiss I just faced
The terrible taste
Of another man’s name on your lips.

Another man’s name on your lips.
