Bubba at the Gates

Story Behind The Song

As per usual, a lot of stuff gets jammed into my head, then works on out in a song. I was having lunch in a little place off of Route 67 by Walnut Ridge AR. It was going to be a 14 hour solo trip from Hot Springs back up to Chi Town. Long day. The first verse sorta happened there and the rest was influenced by a class I was in called Out of the Salt Shaker, and into the World.

Lyrics

Reduced to talking randomly, at strangers in restaurants
Wasn?t really talking to them, if you know what I mean
We called him old Bubba, in his old overalls
Always seemed to have, a week?s growth of beard
There was nothing about him, that needed to be feared
Just an old farm boy, playing out the string
Been a long time, since any love in his direction
Keeps it shut down, don?t seem to miss the affection
And I wanted to reach out, and say, ?God loves you, Bubba?
But the words would get paralyzed by some sort of fear
Then before I?d know it, he?d just disappear
Back into a life, whose meaning was unclear
Now where he went, and what he did
Was the sort of thing, no one thought about much
Did he have Easter dinner, were there presents at Christmas?
Might complain about the weather, but not his life as such
Now I?ve moved on, its many years later
Long after I heard, that Bubba had died
Every now and then, I find myself wondering,
If I?ll see Bubba, at the gates of heaven
Will he tell me, that God loves me
Or just turn, and walk away?
