The Water in the River's Not Still
©Jeffrey C. Ashbaker 11-2013

Back in '72 I was working on the factory line
I should have been chasing my dreams
But my dreaming got left behind
So me and a friend of mine, drove a couple thousand miles
Running after sunshine and searching for our inner child
And I've been standing here looking back into that time
I was wondering if maybe I'll used what I find
---Chorus---
Oh...Don't they warn you
Oh...The road's uphill
You can't keep running and you can't go home after curfew
Cuz, everything changes and the water in the river's not still
Yeah...everything changes and the water in the river's not still
---------------------------------
You can't take back what has happened
And you'll never guess what might be
I only know this, cuz, the same thing happened to me
It doesn't matter where you go, or if you try to start anew
Even if you're hiding out, it always catches up with you
And you'll be standing there wondering what happened this time
Cuz everywhere you go, you're gonna be there to find
--Repeat Chorus--
-Solo-
-Bridge-
I used to do it too, until I learned from you
Life is easy, but you know we make it tough
Without love, without love
--Repeat Chorus--

Oh I love this easygoing folk song...full of wisdom, easy to understand, yet it's one that causes the listener to think. Everything changes and the water in the river's not still. The first verse sets up the story of the song nicely. Searching for the inner child. Love the reference to the curfew, too! The vocals are crystal clear and the subtle background female vocals are perfect. This song is a keeper for sure.

Nicely flowing song with a good message and pleasing vocals and instrumentation. Gives off a little bit of a Jim Croce vibe.

Great job... the song kepted me listening,,, I like the tone of your voice very soothing to listen too..flow was smooth and back ground music was just right for this song. loved the beat for this song.

Great easy feel to this song, you can just settle down into it as it takes you along the story path. I loved the rolling percussion and the steady acoustic drive. Good electric guitar fills tying the whole thing together, really liked it, thanks. Everything does indeed change Mate, that's so true!, good luck with this song.

your vocals are very good and the wrighting is awesome , so is the guitar solo.

What a smooth voice, this is a very pleasant song. I would almost call the music conventional folk with the constant beat, or classic folk, but the voice and the lyrics are unconventional in a quiet, pleasing way that is very appealing. Like a traditional folk song, this song tells a story.

Great story telling song........nostalgia........good guitars...........
