Jericho's Wall

Story Behind The Song

Everyone has had at least one relationship where talking just always seems to make things worse. There's not much of story other than the way Jericho's Wall developed. I sat down in my studio one night with guitar in hand to write a song. I had no idea what I wanted to write about. I just started finger picking an Em chord and, a melody started to come. But, I had nothing to say. So, I wrote that down. "Nothing to write; nothing to say ?. It's all been said in a thousand ways." And, I continued on with "to be redundant" and so forth. After a couple of hours I left it and went to bed. I laid in bed for just a few minutes when the chorus melody came to me. So, I got up to write out the music for it. The next day I was going through my rhyming dictionary looking for a rhyme to "all" or some such word, I don't recall. I came across the phrase "walls of Jericho". That's when it hit me that the song would be "Jericho's Wall" and it would address the walls people put up between each other to the point they no longer feel talk is worthwhile; when there's just nothing left to say that hasn't already been said over and over again. "Hold me in your arms and say no words."

Lyrics

JERICHO?S WALL
(Words & Music by Fremont John Ashton)
You want to talk what would we say?
It?s all been said in a thousand ways.
To be redundant, is to me repugnant
I have nothin? to say you haven?t heard before.

We built a wall both, you and I
With stones of words that made us cry.
Like Jericho?s Wall, let it tumble down.

Hold me in your arms and say no words.
And then, this wall will seem absurd.
Like Jericho?s Wall, let it tumble down

Why waste our breath; get more upset?
Let?s take some time and, just let it rest.
Silence is golden so I?ve been told
Come to me now don?t say anything more.

We built a wall both, you and I
With stones of words that made us cry.
Like Jericho?s Wall, let it tumble down.

Hold me in your arms and say no words.
And then, this wall will seem absurd.
Like Jericho?s Wall, let it tumble down.

Let?s go to bed it?s getting late.
This stacking stones can surely wait.
Like Jericho?s Wall, let it tumble down.

And, in the morning when we rise
We?re bound to see through different eyes.
And then, this wall can tumble down.

(3x) Let it tumble down, yeah
Let it tumble down, yeah.
Like Jericho?s Wall, let it tumble down.

We built a wall both, you and I
With stones of words that made us cry.
Like Jericho?s Wall, let it tumble ??.
