Song Description

Perfect Soundtrack Material: Ever loved someone who hasn't loved you back? Ever had to deal with a disruptive family member? Ever had to let someone you love go? Maybe you'll find peace with this heartfelt acoustic ballad. The structure of this song is unique: Like the Beatle's "Yesterday," the title of the song is in the first line of the verse, and the hook is the question asked at the beginning of each chorus: "Have you been awake?," "Can I stay away?" With three solo breaks that help the great emotional build and water-like flow, this song is perfect soundtrack material, reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me," or Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."

Story Behind the Song

A couple years ago, Erin Schultz was sitting by her computer late one night with an open notebook, an acoustic guitar, and a bottle of vodka. She was fingerstyle noddling around the fretboard in the key of B major and came up the beautiful opening riff to "Peace." Thinking back to one of her first intense relationships, she remembered the pain of trying to love someone who didn't really love her back; of trying to change someone; of trying to pretend you're not being used; then of accepting and letting go. The words "If I found peace on your mountain, I'd join you if I could, but I've been up to your mountain, and I don't like the view," came to her and fit perfectly beside the guitar riff. She hopes the broad scope of the lyrics and the sweeping drama of the music will leave "Peace" open to interpretation for anyone with any kind of broken heart.

Lyrics

If I found peace on your mountain,
I?d join you if I could.
But I?ve been up to your mountain,
and I don?t like the view.

You live life for reasons
I?ll never understand.
But I?d climb up to your mountain,
if you?d lend me your hand.

Have you been awake? Then I know you?ll understand.
?Cause I?ve been awake, and I?ll love you if I can.
But I?ve had all I can take, and I don?t want it
anymore.
And you don?t want me
anymore.

I don?t have any reason, I just do what I do.
If I found peace on your mountain,
I?d stay there with you.
For Valentines and Christmas, and all that in between.
Yeah, I?d climb up to your mountain,
you know I?d be your Queen.

Can I stay away from all that you are?
You?ve been gone far too long to be here anymore.
And I?ve had all I can take, and I don?t want it
anymore
And you don?t want me
anymore.

Have you been awake? Then I know you?ll understand.
?Cause I?ve been awake, and I?ll love you if I can.
But I?ve had all I can take, and I don?t want it
anymore
And you don?t want me
anymore.
