Story Behind the Song

Inspired by the album 'Night Hawks at the Diner,' by Tom Waits, I wrote this in homage. I hitched home from St. Petersburg, Florida on Christmas break with my martin and sort of lived the lyric.

Lyrics

Smoke and steam through bracken green, a trav'ling monologue.
The air is clear, the scene surreal, 's no place to lay me down
With a book of prose, out 'On The Road,'
just Kerouac that frown.
With ten long miles 'till supper time,
ten more hours before dawn

Lookin' at magazines in three - D
'n through cigarette smoke at scenery
St. Louis in one more day.
Waking up in rumpled clothes, truck stops and motor homes.
No time to wash yesterday, away.

An Autumn breeze jars memory
years just fade away.
On Saturday, music plays for the homecoming parade.
Girls float high and wave goodbye,
sweet kisses gently blown.
The souvenirs of passing years and friends from long ago.

The moon is full, it's silver threads weave tapestries of light.
Ahead the road meanders on and fades into the night.
Skylines of the river town rise from a muddy shore.
Landmarks appear, now its clear, I'm home again once more.

Looking at magazines in 3-d, 'n through cigarette smoke at scenery.
St. Louis in one more day.
Waking up in rumpled clothes, truck stops and motor homes
No time to wash yesterday away.
