Song Description

A young man, broke, lonely and exhausted in Paris, takes a train under the English Channel to reunite with his lover in London. He describes how they met, alludes to their sexual dynamics and express euphoria over being with her during Christmas and Boxing Day. The song has an overall serene groove with several recurring hooks, and a middle section that builds tension and explodes with emotion and color.

Story Behind the Song

I've spent time in both London and Paris. Paris began to feel heavy for me after awhile and I felt a relief and strong sense of belonging when I crossed over to London. That memory turned into a story that I applied to a melody and structure that I already had.

Lyrics

BOXING DAY

Boxing day
Just a couple of castaways
Who didn?t go to work today
No one?s doing a thing
Yesterday,
The finest of holidays
We spent lounging in a dreamy haze
While the angels sang

Swan diving into Jell-O
All things around us green and red
You?ve got the strangest day glow
And all my thoughts remain unsaid
But you can sense it
From what you?ve read
I think you can guess it
In my head
I belong with you

Boxing day
We made it through another day
Forgive me if I?ve nothing to say
But I just want to be
For thirty weeks
I?ve been walking the Paris streets
I couldn?t ever get to sleep
I never felt like me

Anticipation in the Chunnel
Miles underground and walking on air
Touch down at Waterloo Station
No trip has ever been so worth the fare
I?m so exhausted
The cupboard?s bare
My bank is busted
And I don?t care
I belong with you

I remember back in ?95
I was in Piccadilly Circus waiting for a ride
The weather was cold and the traffic tight
Like Champs Elysses on a Saturday night
There was a Pakistani tourist taking a picture beside me
The taxi driver must never have found me
I walked past the beggars and the policemen,
Hopped a double decker, made my way upstairs,
And that?s when I met you

Boxing day
We woke up together down at the bay
Made love under the Milky Way
At the end of the pier
Still here today
No one said I had to stay
But how could anyone walk away
From anything so dear

First time, everything?s forgiven
Next time?s always second-guessed
Third time?s like momentum?s starting to slip
But the fourth is always best
A huge sensation
Hits my chest
Sanctification
Against your breast
I belong with you
