Chain

Story Behind The Song

I've been living in Paris for several years now, and I was living here during the recent war in Iraq. I wrote this song because I felt it needed to be written. It's easy to travel all across the globe, and yet people often don't travel because they're afraid of what they don't know. I've also lived in Israel and Haiti and I recall my initial fear before moving to these countries. My family was frightened for me and people couldn't understand why I wanted to go. But in my opinion, being able to travel is a privilege and it has helped me to understand others better. The reason this song repeats the line "it's a chain" is because I believe that we're all connected and what we do in one country, most definitely will have an effect on people living in a different country. Just like the food chain, people, animals and the environment interact and help to sustain each other all over the world.

Song Description

It's about the fear of the unknown which keeps many people from traveling and expanding their horizons. However, once we take a deep breath and get over our initial fears, we find that people all over the world are still people just like us. In knowing this, we can begin to dissolve our own ignorances and enrich our lives.

Lyrics

Chain

Dust on the side of the highway, a little girl is on her way
to greet the world. It?s a beautiful day.
She?s got her arms held way up high, running so fast she?s tryin? to fly
And with a little wind, you know she might.

She takes her mind to another world
Where she imagines a lonely girl
And as they smile, they look the same.
Where there?s a heart
There?s a link and a tie, it?s a chain.

Folks told her not to go away, it?s a dangerous world you really should stay
But she was not afraid.
She packs her bag as the wild winds blow, she?s going to a place that she doesn?t know
She takes a deep breath and lets it go.

She takes a plane to a great unknown
To realize that she?s not alone
In the end, we?re all the same
Where there?s a heart
There?s a link and a tie.
Bridge:
It?s a smile; it?s the shake of a hand
Respect for life from what I understand
We?re all in this together
There?s a core and a heart and a tie that?s tight
There?s a link and a knot, it?s a chain.

While away she met a girl so kind who moved her heart and changed her mind
Made her see just what she needed to find
Living poor on the countryside, this girl gave a smile with nothing to hide
The wind blew and turned the tide.

She took a plane to another world
Made a friend in a lonely girl
As they smiled, they looked the same
Where?s there?s a heart
There?s a link and a tie?
She took a plane to a great unknown
To realize she was not alone
In the end, we?re all the same
Where there?s a heart
There?s a link and a tie.
Cause we all laugh and we all cry
We need to know we?re in this together,
There?s a knot and it?s tied so tight.
It?s a chain.
