Story Behind The Song
I love living here, but it can be hard when you open your eyes and see the shortcomings, missed opportunities, and systemic biases that plagued this big city. Like a lot of big towns, Toronto fancies itself as a world class setting. That is certainly true if you include traffic, wealth inequity, skyrocketing housing costs, and a focus on circuses, like World Cup soccer instead of caring for it's citizens. I grew up in a protest era, and this town called out for me to call it out for its ongoing hypocrisy that is wreaking havoc in our streets.
Song Description
Mixing rock, funk and a New Orleans breakdown, "Bad Hard Town" is about how "Toronto the Good" is far from it. We elected a drug addict mayor who was succeeded by a corporate mouth piece (John Tory), we've got dirty cops who too often serve and protect themselves first. But we're a world class city, right? Sure, if you count some of the worst traffic anywhere in the world. And we have a voting population that would rather believe everything is fine, than make the hard choices to clean up the mess. Sound familiar? It's just about every city's profile, in some ways.
