It Ain't the Fall That Hurts

Story Behind The Song

My dad was a rough old Bast!@#$ and had a whole bag of wise little sayings that he thought was helpful and thought were asinine (at the time) after "going up and down the road of life time and time again," I realized that my dad was right and I wanted to write something for him (posthumously) and this is the result I am particularly proud of the thought that it isn't love that hurts us but rather when it stops that causes pain which was my thought not my dad's he never spoke that many words at one time in his entire life! ha ha ha

Lyrics

When I was just a boy, I wanted to ride a bronc in a rodeo
So i got on and tried to ride but man did I ever get throwed
Dad said "do you want to ride again?"
I said "No way Dad the fall really hurt."
Dad just smiled and laughed and said
"Son, it ain't the fall that hurts"

CHORUS:
Son It ain't the fall that hurts
you know it's the sudden stop that causes pain
And if your gonna ride you're gonna fall
There's no need to complain
So pick yourself up off the ground
And wipe away the tears and the dirt
Get back on and ride again
Cause son, you know it ain't the fall that hurts

Some time later I met a girl and fell in love
I swore to anyone who'd listen
She was sent from heaven up above
Til one day she said good-bye
Left me hurtin cryin and all alone
I told my Dad I'd never love again
Cause love really hurts

Dad said Son it aint the love that hurts
You know it's the sudden stop that causes pain
And if you're gonna live you've gotta love
there's no need to complain
So pick yourself up off the ground
And wipe away the tears and the dirt
Get back on and try again
cause son you know
it ain't the fall that hurts

Now I've been up and down this road of life
And I've fallen down time and time again
I think about my Dad's words
Each time that I lose or I win
I've got boys of my own
And I tell them this each time they hit the dirt
Son get up and try again cause you know
It ain't the fall that hurts
