Love Was Just A Word

Story Behind The Song

One day I was driving around Nashville after a rainstorm and I was struck by how beautiful everything looked. The colors were richer, the air felt clean, the remaining raindrops were glittering in the emerging sunlight and a rainbow was forming on the horizon. Nothing had really changed, but the rain coming through made everything look so beautiful. It reminded me of falling in love. A couple weeks later, I was home visiting family in Colorado and ended up writing with Jon Coleman. I brought this idea to him and we got to talking about falling in love, me with my boyfriend at the time and him with his wife. Jon sat down at the piano and said the first couple of lines and the song was one of those magical ones that kind of just wrote itself. Within 2 hours we had finished and I knew we had something special with this one.

Lyrics

The stars were just lights Up in the sky
And the moon was just something that catches your eye
There was no magic in a morning blue bird
And love was just a word

Art on a wall was just something to see
Songs were just chords and melodies
Noise in the background that's all they were
When love was just a word

Just 4 letters that stick on your tongue
Like a shot that's too strong
a new pair of jeans that don't fit
But you still really want
I ain't going back to the day when my heart
Wasn't yours
And love was just a word

It's like the way the world looks after rain
It's not all that different but everything's changed
Before I held you baby I was so sure
That love was just a word

Just 4 letters that stick on your tongue
Like a shot that's too strong
Like a new pair of jeans that don't fit
But you still really want
I ain't going back to the day when my heart
Wasn't yours
And love was just a word

Some days were just fine all on my own
It ain't all bad living alone
I thought I was strong when I couldn't get hurt
But love was just a word

Just 4 letters that stick on your tongue
Like a shot that's too strong
Like a new pair of jeans that don't fit
But you still really want
I ain't going back to the day when my heart
Wasn't yours
And love was just a word
