number99 is the name of Matthew Smith’s experimental new solo project. It came into being in late 2003 in order to escape the confines of Matthew Smith’s acoustic singer/songwriter image. By incorporating electric guitar, various guitar and vocal effects, and a unique way of viewing songwriting in general, the purpose of number99 is to embrace radical change and experimentation in a market saturated with conventional singer/songwriters. In addition to playing regularly in the Atlanta local scene, number99 is actively working on a full length record that combines elements from not only alternative rock, but pop, folk, and electronic music as well. number99 endorses and is highly influenced lyrically by Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Kurt Vonnegut, and musically by Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley and Wilco.
