I Burn is JoAnneh’s first CD, and is a discovery of the lyrical/alternative/folk sound that emerged as she wrote her first few songs. Her work is deeply influenced by the music she grew up with: Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Joni Mitchell; Bob Dylan; Linda Ronstadt; Peter, Paul and Mary; James Taylor, Jackson Browne; and later, female artists like Joan Armatrading, The Indigo Girls, and Sarah McLachlan.

JoAnneh’s songwriting stems from a deep need to express the heart—a longing to swim into the soft places of our inner life that we can easily trample over in our fear that love will elude us. Her lyrics explore realms of longing, faith, overcoming, desire, need, obsession, falling, betrayal and loss. The lilting musical lines and rich harmonies resonate with the struggles of a lover seeking to find an open, willing place in herself to give and receive. Her poetry lets us know that, in the inner realms of love, there really is no bravado. There is no quick fix, no rush to the next thing, no pretending. That at the end of the day, we are each left with our own fears, losses, joys and blessings, and that our faith and trust in another—or in love itself—requires a deeper truth-telling.

The CD grew out of a collaboration with Producer/Instrumentalist Gavin Ross and percussionist Curtis Byrd. JoAnneh: “I met Curtis in a café on Sunset in West Hollywood, and he made the introduction to Gavin. When we first went into the studio, none of us knew where this was going to go. I was just showing up with the music, and we were building on it, piece by piece. They were both incredibly generous with their talent, and it was amazing to me to see the songs take shape one by one, each with its own delicate flavor.”

Later, producer Chris Johnson (Evanescence) came in to produce and polish “Give Me More” and “Torn Apart Heart,” adding a perfect mix of pop and lyrical smoothness to the overall sound. Brian Springer (Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Toni Braxton, Ashanti) mixed the CD, bringing it all together. Steve Hall (Loreena McKennitt, Alanis Morissette, Chris Isaak, Stevie Nicks) mastered the work.

JoAnneh: “Everyone who’s worked on this with me has been a gift. Gavin and Curtis were steady and true. Gavin’s an amazing musician and a gifted producer, and Curtis is always on it. LiJie’s an incredible keyboard player, and Aomawa and Ro’s strings captured just the flavor of the longing heart I was looking for. Chris Johnson and Brian Springer brought the polish to the work. And then there’s the art work: I asked Nicole Stanton (photographer) to go for a romantic, passionate sensibility, and to make it feel like sculpture. She got it. And Mackie Osborne’s design work is just exquisite. I’m so happy with all of it.”

The past two years have brought the artist a very rich period of songwriting and composition, as well as recording. “I love this process. This work has brought me a joy I didn’t even think to ask for.”
