Dover post article about Brian

Classic jazz guitarist keeps it different,
professional

By Kelli Myers

Even a broken wrist can’t stop Brian Keith Stemetzki
from strummin’ on his six-string.

The 33-year-old guitarist, known simply in the music
biz as Brian Keith, wouldn’t let a recent car accident
get in his way of doing what he does best – and what
he’s been doing since the sixth grade.

With a piece of metal lodged through his right wrist
bone, he’ll play alongside Dave Kaczorowski (upright
bass) at the Maple Dale Country Club this Friday
evening.

At more upbeat events, Stemetzki will include drummer
Elmo Wolf in his set, but for this gig will focus on
his signature low-key, smooth and melodic style
featuring no vocals, an upright bass and his acoustic
guitar (aka the Brian Keith Jazz Duo).

Listening to The Beatles as a kid was all it took to
get this natural guitarist off the ground. A few music
lessons later, he was playing in numerous rock bands
in the Philly and New Jersey areas throughout his
teenage years.

Following high school, Stemetzki studied jazz
performance at The University of the Arts in Philly,
and later earned a degree in music education from
Rowan University.

He eventually became an instructor at The New Jersey
School of the Arts and later teamed up with
saxophonist Joe Holland in ’96 to form Quickpeak, a
smooth jazz group playing mostly at weddings,
coffeehouses and restaurants.

His time with Quickpeak was well spent, he said, but
it was soon time for a change.

Now, Stemetzki is a social worker by day and books his
own gigs by night, playing an average of 10 shows per
month.

“Music is definitely my creative outlet … it’s always
been a part of who I am,” he said.

Although most of his works are jazz covers, Stemetzki
will throw in some Beatles tunes, originals, and songs
from the blues, Latin and swing genres to keep
audience members on their toes.

“I don’t just play for myself like jazz musicians
often tend to do,” he said. “I try to please people,
and jazz typically doesn’t have that big of an
audience, so I’m always trying to grab more people.”

Influenced by greats such as Miles Davis and John
Coltrane, Stemetzki will mix it up with one of his 10
different guitars – his favorite’s the ES335 – and
different songs at each event.

“I’ll pick songs out of a book, or think of something
off the top of my head,” he said. “I’ll do a Beatles
or Hendrix song instrumentally … just try to do things
people haven’t heard.”

For Stemetzki, he’ll keep at it, and no matter where
he ends up, will always remember his first U2 concert
in 1984, and will always keep his morals at heart.

“It’s about quality … being there on time, keeping the
music good and looking professional,” he said. “I
always knew I wouldn’t be a big rock star, but I love
this. If you love something, you do it. I can’t
imagine not doing it.”

The club really enjoyed your guitar program. We all learned something about guitars. (I myself just thought there were two basic designs--electrical & acoustic). You really educated us. The music was very pleasant to listen to. Especially nice was the casual atmosphere you created. The ladies didn't feel uncomfortable talking occasionally in low tones to one another, as well as helping themselves to another cup of coffee or tea. It really created the cabaret effect, and made for a very relaxing time after the luncheon. I heard many positive comments about your performance.

Thank you for making our Valentine luncheon an event to remember.
